Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

They're awesome if you use the thumb over barrel hold that the Magpul Dynamics guys teach. I don't use them on any of my rifles because I don't use that hold. The AFG2 is what the AFG should have been. It's slimmer, lighter, and a much improved design.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

I have tried many holds until finding this one worked best for me. I use the AFG and it has worked great. Gives me a better hold and I am on target much faster. I don't like the other front grips due to the way they bend my elbow so this was the right choice for me. Good thing is this item is under $40 so its not a bunch of money on something to see if it works or not. Plus if you don't like it sell it here.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

Does the AFG 2 take up less rail space? I don't run 10 miles of rail on my AR so space is at a premium.

Don't mean to hijack, steelcomp, seemed related to me.

I'v been experimenting with holding my left arm more in a horizontal position with my elbow higher, which naturally rotates your left hand upward on the rifle. (I actually put my VFG on the side rail as an experiment...it didn;t work, LOL). Definitely better follow up with this position and more control from left to right. Vertical control doesn't seem to suffer. With this elevated left arm and hand position, a VFG seems almost useless.

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I'm gonna try one. Why is the 2 better than the 1?

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

I love the AFG and have them on a few of my M14s and one on my AKM.
I don't put my thumb over the top.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

The AFG2 allows the use of the side rail above the AFG. The original one had additional material that didnt allow certain rail mounted accessories to be mounted. If you compare the pictures of the two it's easier seen.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

The AFG2 would have saved me quite a bit of work
fitting the original version to a SAGE EBR stock, but
it looks like it would be too small for my big hands.

Actually, the AFG2 isn't all that much smaller in terms of the grip surface length as the original (about 1/4" less), but the AFG2 has a good bit less width/girth. Magpul changed the angle on the back portion of the grip a good bit which makes the AFG2 look much smaller while only reducing the OAL by a inch or less (and reduced the number of rail spaces needed to mount it), but it really isn't all that much smaller. The AFG2 just has a lower profile in terms of Magpul's removal of the "wings" present on the AFG1 which allows for a more "universal" fit on a larger variety of rifles/carbines. You definitely would have saved some time/energy with the AFG2 on your Sage EBR stock!

Personally, I prefer the feel of the AFG1 because of the added size which I think lends itself to a better fit for those of us with bigger mits.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

Im trying one myself. I havent decided wether or not it is a must have item or not. I threw it on an order that I made with Palmetto State ... it was 30 bucks, I said why not. If I find that I dont like it, I am sure I can sell it for 25 bucks or so and get my money back out of it.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

OUCH!! Yeah...definitely would have saved you all that trouble!

I can't believe you had the patience to sit and do that with a hand file. I'd have broken out the Dremel and a cut-off wheel and been in and done in 5min!

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

I shoot with my thumb wrapped completely over the top of the forend. I never run vertical grips of any type but thought I'd try the AFG. I have medium-small hands (size 9) and the AFG1 just makes the forend a bit too 'fat' for my liking. It's at a comfortable angle, but makes the forend feel too large.

Maybe I'll try the AFG2, might work better for me?

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

Thanks for the comparison pics! I am using the first gen and like it.

It looks like the AFG 2 also has a slightly steeper angle for a more upright feel. Anybody use both? Does the 2nd gen put your hand in a more upright position?

I don't own a Dremel... not yet.

The only "angle" that changed was the angle of the rearward portion of the AFG2 which is one of the things that allowed Magpul to shorten the OAL of the unit. I am talking about the section that goes from the rail mount section at the top of the AFG, down the back of the grip and ultimately forming the rear "finger rest" of the grip. It did NOT change anything about the grip angle itself...just the angle of that portion of the AFG. Both models have the same grip angle.

Take a careful look at the first pic Ty posted above and you'll see what I mean (sorry...my limited descriptive abilities probably aren't helping out nearly as much as the pic)!

No self-respecting American man should be without a Dremel of one variety or another!!

They really are incredible little tools. I have used them for a whole host of different chores over the last ten years and they really are life-savers (and time-savers) in many instances. Mine gets beat on for everything from household repairs/upgrades to auto repair to home gunsmithing. My most recent acquisition was one of the new generation cordless models which is FANTASTIC. I never realized what a PITA the corded models were until I had a little more freedom that this one offers (especially in tighter spots where space is at a minimum).

It's on my list of things to get before the end of the year.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

I dont use a AFG or VFG. I use a fixed front sight as a handstop, I dont care for a bunch of stuff hanging off my rifle. I found putting the area of my hand between my thumb and first finger on the front sight post I had the same effect as the AFG.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

I recently switched from a 10" rail with a Magpul vertical grip to a 13" rail with an AFG1 (bought used) and love it so far. I initially tried the AFG on the 10" rail, but it felt awkward as I couldn't get a good arm extension/natural grip with it.

You dont shoot all that often do you? Nor do you shoot long strings of fire either huh?

Upon closer inspection, yep...it just looked slightly steep bcos of the rear post, but they are the same. Forgot my geometry!

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

Switched out my surefire M900A for an AFG and a rail mounted surefire on my entry gun. Much better control and more comfortable.

Sure do, I also wear gloves. I guess a fixed front sight wasnt what I meant. I use a DD Rail mount fixed front sight on a VTAC Extreme rail, the sight is kind of my handstop. Ill see if I have a picture.

ETA:
Not my gun, but you can see my thumb is right on the front sight. This gun was hot as hell.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

I would go with the AFG2. Like others have said, its what the first gen was suppose to be.

I have FDE MOE Handguard and CTR stock on my RRA-15, and plan on getting the black AFG2 to go along with my 2-tone look.

Looks to me like a static demo, not a live fire string...however

Being hard core doesn't change the laws of thermodynamics. You place your hand against the front sight base after extended strings of fire and you will smell roasting flesh.

I have more than once burned myself on an M16 and M4.

You won't see many guys running a rifle hard without gloves.

That kinda looks like Kyle Defoor, he is a shooter

</div></div>Have you ever tried the AFG? From the looks of it (and I admit it's difficult to see from just one pic) your hand would be much more relaxed with the AFG, not having to turn your wrist quite so far. You'd probably be able to relax your grip some, as well.
Just an observation.
I haven't tried an AFG yet which is why I started the thread, but I like what I see and what I hear mkes sense. I really appreciate all the respoonses and the fact that this thread SO FAR has stayed on course. Thanks!

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

Good thread...I have the AFG1 and like it so far. Heck I didn't even know there was an AFG2 so I guess I will have to check it out, Looks a little better than the first model. I have noticed a lot of shooters are switching their shooting grip position to the thumb over the top rail grip. It looks like a lot of people have been to the Magpul and Vtac schools...Where they teach that.

Re: Magpul AFG...who likes them?...

I just can't get into the magpul dynamics taught hold. I like a good vfg close to the magwell so I can keep the rifle as tight into me as possible, I feel like I have less control the further out towards the muzzle I have my non firing hand

Just what works for me

Me neither.

I have used the Mako Magwell grip and found it more useful.
