Re: Magpul Precision Rifle 2
Yep, great class. My comfort zone is the confidence I have in my ability to consistently execute the fundamentals Caylen introduced in PR 1 in no-stress prone supported shooting. He made it clear from the outset that we'd be putting that in the rear-view mirror, and quickly at that. All of our drills were shot for score, and the cream definitely rose to the top as Mike and Tim walked away with the top placings when all was said and done.
The theme of the class was learning to use the rifle as a tool to solve real-world marksmanship problems, with a strong emphasis on unconventional supported shooting positions. Applying the fundamentals to these new shooting positions was challenging, to say the least. When I was able to find NPA the steel rang at distances that I would have otherwise believed were unreachable from anything but the prone.
The final day tied all of the previously covered material together with a challenging field exercise shot over varied terrain in a gusty frontal wind that was literally blowing from all points of the compass relative to our shooting positions as the day progressed.
I came away from the course with a new appreciation for what's possible with a rifle. A week ago I thought that shooting off a tripod or sticks could offer incremental improvements at best over unsupported shooting. As I write this I realize that with practice I can build remarkably stable shooting positions with my rifle, my body, and simple, easily portable props.
For me, PR 1 was about fundamentals and putting a few new tricks in the bag. The fundamentals were absolutely necessary for this class, but it was very much about the tricks. I can't honestly say that they're in the bag quite yet, but Caylen does a remarkable job of giving his students the tools that they need to raise the level of their game. I walked away with an awareness of new skills, a clear understanding of how to refine them, and the desire to do so. I'm not sure how much more could be asked from a weekend of instruction. Highly recommended.
