Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Remember back when you were a kid. If your favorite action hero had or used a certain item, then there was a desire to acquire that item. It's the same with guns and adults. Many look at our Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airman as Heroes. It's only natural to want to replicate the tools they use in order to capture some of that magic.
For former military it's a little different. I have several rifles, pistols and shotguns that are setup to accomplish certain tasks. They don't look a whole lot like their "issued" counterparts because I set them up to better accomplish their task based on my budget and specific requirements. I still seek to acquire several of my "issued" tools because I have memories of the times when they were in my hand. Some were good, some were bad, but all were earned and bear remembering. Somehow holding the weapon converts those memories to steel and fiberglass or aluminum and plastic. I am almost done with my AR15A2 and I am about 3/4 of the way to completing my M40A1. One day I will end up with a M9 even though I think they are total trash.
The rest of the Military arms (M1, 1903, M1A, etc) I want just because they are American heritage.
To each his own, but if the OP wants to paint his SR25, who cares? I though the M110's looked pretty cool since black sucks for anything other than showing off. When my AR10 is done and running like she should she will get the same Krylon treatment my 700 got.
