First off, I am totally ignorant to gun pricing beyond seeing what the "market" will bear on the usual sites. Given that they are clobbered with guns that aren't going anywhere anytime soon, I need a little help pricing an offer on a very nice 40X that I have the opportunity to buy.

The basic stats are:
1970's manufacture Remington 40X in 308 (7.62mm on barrel)
Walnut 3 position stock with 2 way adjustable buttplate
About 650 rounds on the barrel
Glass bedded
Drilled and tapped for iron sights and period correct scope

I already have it's "cousin" in a Remington 700 25-06 but that one will be going out the door since I am not much for the caliber. I could definitely use the 40X at the 600, 800, 900, and 1000 yard line though.

Re: Making a realistic offer on an older Remington 40X

Sir,
For some reason they do not bring as much on the secondary marked as I think they should. Is it a repeater or SS?
I have recently sold 7 or 8 40X repeaters in .223 and .308/7.62. Much as you describe. They brought from 1300 to 1600 with sights and target blocks. I have 3 left one in .22 RF USMC marked, one in .244 Rem which is about mint and one in 7.62 which is also very nice. None have the Adj butt or cut stocks. They will be priced in the same range. The wood stocks are just not tacticool enough to appeal to most on this site. I really do not see why they do not bring more as most shoot right along with the top end customs I have owned. Never seen a bad one that was not shot out. Hope this helps.

Huge help, thank you. I passed a 40X USMC 22LR through my hands some years back and regretted it. That's the depth of my experience though.

The rifle I have in mind is a single shot (otherwise it'd be on the XTC line too).

This one is without sights (I'd put something more modern on anyhow) so I'm figuring $1000ish.

We'll see if it shoots--I've got a test drive planned for next weekend. In the meantime, I'm just trying as hard as I can to like 25-06.
