Fairly new here, but long time lurker. I've done some searching but couldn't really find any answers.

I have a Savage 10FP and it's about 4 years old with less than 1k rounds put thru it....I know, I need to shoot more. Anyway, it's all stock except for a B&C stock I put on right when I bought it. What other upgrades do any of you recommend to help improve performance, if any? Anything with the bolt? Not sure I need a new barrel yet, but I'm not opposed. Basically, I'm looking to make something good, better with the understanding that nothing will make me a better shooter other than slinging more lead down range.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

Stock choice is a good one. I would also look into a new trigger. I wouldn't worry about changing out the barrel until you need to do so.

It really all depends on what you want to do with it, as to what modifications you should do. I would add a bipod, stock pack, good sling... and go SHOOT!!

+1 I would not mess with the barrel either. Most Savage barrels are pretty decent and with only a 1000 rounds through the one you have, it should have a lot of life left in it.

Everything here and you'll be good to go.

What bolt lift kit do you recommend?

Re: Making my Savage 10FP better

Alot of guys fashion their own up. Some use 38special cases cut with a bearing in the center.

I really like the idea of the thruster bearing from the RC car.

Or you can purchase a drop in kit from Kevin Rayhill at www.stockadegunstocks.com for around 8 bucks.

I personally haven't put a lift kit on my savage yet, but it would deffinately benifit from one.

+1 to this idea. Like stated before me, under 1k for Savage barrels is almost nothing. So I wouldnt mess with it.

if you dont have a cocking indicator like the new 10pc you can just use the 38 case and a 5/32" bearing. search my posts and you will see my dealy where i made mine and took photos. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1660661#Post1660661

Re: Making my Savage 10FP better

A premium barrel replacement will change your game. Lothar-Walther in Georgia makes and sells Savage varmint contour replacement barrels, already Savage threaded and chambered. I have a pair in .260 Rem, and they are gorgeous. Savage barrels are generally plenty accurate enough, but the bores could be smoother and foul less. I went with L-W to get a 28" length.

Any new barrel should be accompanied by proper handloading load development to find the best accuracy from the new barrel.

If the trigger is Pre-Accue-Trigger, buy and install a Sharpshooter Supply trigger. The BR version may be a bit too light.

Optics are a whole broad field of exploration in themselves. After some time and experience, you will settle on a good choice. But no optics will perform to their potential without good mounts. Build that good foundation, and tailor the slope to match the scope and rifle's potential. For LR comp, 6-24x40 should work, although with low light, better glass and a bigger objective can help.

The same goes for action bedding. Whatever method you choose, it needs to be properly executed.

After that it's all about training and practice. Actually, I prefer to do mine with a .22LR at scaled down distances. Cheaper and easier to get to.

I've got the same Savage and did exactly what you did. As soon as I bought it I switched for a B&C stock. That did wonders for the gun.

I'm lucky enough that I have SSS about an hour north of me and I dropped off my rifle to have him work on it. He bedded it, T&T the action, upgraded lug and knob, chopped barrel, and dropped in his trigger.

Rifle shot great with the stock upgrade, shoots outstanding with the new trigger and improvements. Turn time was about 3 months, but I'm a happy customer!
