Ive never been to a tactical shoot, or any shoot for that matter. Can someone give me a tidbit of an idea on how this stuff works. I really want to go and really think my rifle will be how I want it for my very novice shooting ability. I dont plan on winning anything except knowledge from the vast amount of people that may have been doing this all their lives or quite a bit longer than I. TIA

The best thing to do is get info on how and what to carry and then just go and do it. My first shoot was an eye opener and showed my training deficencies (SP). Had a great time and learned alot from the other competitiors. The key is to just have fun and learn. Then after a couple polish and get ready for the win.

Ouch (I chuckle every time I write that..),

Best advice I could give you is:

- Know your zero and your dope. Try to shoot your rifle at as many distance increments as possible so you know that at 500 yards you need X clicks up from your zero to hit. If you don't have a chance to get dope at all distances, use a ballistics program like JBM to get calculated dope for your loads, then compare that to your actual dope. Work up a range card that shows your clicks up/down from zero and have that handy. Some guys (myself included) attach the card to their rifle.

- Organize your gear so you can easily carry the essentials. Gear setup varies greatly from shooter to shooter so you have to tweak this over time. But basically, you need your rifle, ammo/magazines, rifle data, rear bag, etc., on you. If you don't use a rifle-mounted bipod, carry a rucksack, shooting sticks or tripod so you can get a steady base to shoot from when time allows. Binoculars will be helpful on certain stages to assist you in finding targets.

- Come with an open mind. This style of shooting is very different from benchrest or multigun or whatever. But they all share one thing in common. The clock. When you arrive at a stage, listen closely to the stage briefing. Then work through how you plan to shoot the stage. Then try to do what you planned when the buzzer sounds (the hardest part). You can definitely get pointers from other shooters and watch what they do. Just make sure you're not changing up your plan while you're on deck.

Beyond that, have fun. These matches are a blast and with the terrain offered at Rockcastle, this one will be especially so.

Thanks socket. Im trying to just get a small idea of how things are going to get rolling. I am going to start working on my dope in the next few weeks. But thats with a speer hunting bullet. I really wanted to get my amax's in but I cant get any right now. I will keep shooting these bullets and learning, and hope that my amax's come in next month. Thanks again, I will have to see what my plans are for this time period of the shoot and sign up. Im going to be by myself so will I get paired up with a spotter or how else does that work?

When you send in your registration form there is a section on spotters. Just check the box that says "I want to be paired up with someone." We're going to try to get all shooters who want to pair up together so they can find a buddy.

Awesome, I suppose a .243 will be open class. Do I get paired with another open class or am I going to be with a mag class person? I guess I need to get back into shape haha.

And Roger. The "nam'ba'lance" cant make it all the way back there. But I have plenty of IV sets, and we all know he fastest way to get fluids in the body.. LOL

Just messing around. The entire event is challenging but very doable.I dont want to give anyone the wrong idea.

Except Chiller, you have the "extended course"

Thanks. I've shot 3-gun and USPSA for several years, but never a rifle match. Can you tell me if this is similar or some of the differences? What is the expected average round count on a stage?

Will competitors be able to look at the long range targets with binoculars/spotting scopes/rifle scopes while waiting for the other competitors to shoot? (for the purpose of ranging) or will our first look be on the clock?

I ask because I assume we can't use the rifle scope (for safety reasons), and the only binos I have is a LRF, and I don't want to be DQ'd for possessing them.

I would suggest you beg or borrow some non-LRF binos or observe without.

Even if you are not on the line if someone sees you "observing" with a set of LRF Binos you can bet they will assume you are ranging the targets.

If I show up it will be as a competitor, but as a competitor it would piss me off.

1b375 will need to answer that one after he gets back from the mountains.

I will say the 2nd to last sniper comp down here in Ga he put on, no one was allowed to put scopes(spotting or otherwise) on the targets till it was go time for them and their spotter. I didn't shoot the last one, so I don't know if he repeated that rule.

Since Joe is still out hunting I'll try to answer some of the recent questions:

<span style="font-weight: bold">Spectator cost</span> - I don't believe there will be any charge for spectators.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Round count</span> - The only real info we have right now is that there will be 8 stages plus an optional side match and total round count should be around 100. The actual details of the stages are/will be known only by Joe Harris, the Match Director. A lot of us chiming in on this thread (me, KNIGHT11B4, msting22, bmarc69) will be RO'ing the match. But we will be shooting it early too, so we don't/won't have any advance info either. My guess, based on other matches, is that you'll probably shoot at 8-16 targets per stage. So probably 10-20 rounds is the most you would need on any one stage. Again, this is a guess. As always, I would recommend bringing extra rounds in case you shoot more or have to do a re-shoot of a stage. I'll probably bring 125-150 total.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Range Estimation</span> - Joe has mentioned that on some stages competitors will be given the opportunity to create a range card prior to shooting. So all competitors will be put on line and given a fixed amount of time to range targets or terrain features via passive means (mil-dots in their scope, spotting scope, etc.) On other stages, you won't be able to do this. So you will either have to take the time to range targets on the clock, or simply make a guess, take a shot and then correct based on hits/misses.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Range Finders</span> - I would definitely NOT bring binos that have a range-finder feature or any other LRF. As chiller said, if anyone sees you pull them out, they're going to assume you're using the LRF and you risk a DQ.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Slots Available</span> - The last official count was 54 registered shooters. I know we've received 10-15 more forms since then. So we should still have slots but get your registration forms in soon. Also, the early bird registration ends on November 1st (one week from today). Entries post marked after November 1st pay the full fee of $175. Joe gets back later this week from Montana, so we should have an updated count up soon after that.

If you have any other questions, please post them up. If we don't know the answers we'll find out ASAP.

Guys this is going to be a great match. We're putting a lot of work into make sure everyone has a great time. And I look forward to meeting a lot of you face-to-face. Well, some of you anyway...
