I am looking for a new briefcase or small backpack, does not necessarily have to be tacticool but I prefer a good soft (not hard case) briefcase to carry to and from work, I don't really like the ones with the huge flap that covers all of the compartments. I have a leather bag now that works well but is getting worn. Any Ideas ?

Thanks
Richard

never been able to do the briefcase thing.

Picked up a Tumi at an airport somewhere, been jumping on and off planes all over the world with it for the last 10 years and it is still going strong, leather is a little worn now but no issues - plus they have great back-up and service.

Definitley not "tacticool" but it does a great job!

Re: Man Bags...

I have one of the Eagle courier bags that I got from Natchez see previous post. I was looking for something that did not have a tacticool look so I could gray into a crowd, especially overseas.

Since getting it I have not travelled much but I think it is a well-designed and I think a well-made bag that is comfortable even fully loaded down. Whether it will last the thirty years being dragged around like the ruck it replaced only time will tell. Since I probably won't last an additional 30 years it may not have to either.

Hope this helps,

wade

Filson is the best briefcase ever made. I have one that is built like a brick crap house, their clothing is tops, cannot wear it out.

As stated, Saddleback produces some good stuff and it is pretty rugged. I own one of their large traditional briefcases in chestnut and it is a sharp looking case. They are spendy but it isn't a joke that your grandkids will be getting the thing. Another bag I am really happy with is made by Belstaff again it is not cheap but it is well made. I have used mine all over the world and it has held up well and is the perfect size for me. They make larger ones but if you fill them up, they are uncomfortable to carry. If you go this route, beware that there are a lot of exact knockoffs coming out of china which is why I stick with reputable places like J. Crew.

Most are made in the DR, but still Eagle, and still nice stuff at a good price.

Use the pull down "search by brand" and find Eagle Tactical Systems, this gives another pull down with all of the Eagle stuff.</div></div> Except TN residents like the OP and myself can't order from Natchez. Neither can GA or AL.

These guys make the "Spartan" go-bag that was designed for the film by Eric Haney. They have some other good stuff. I've never ordered from them, but have seen some of their gear and it's well-made. Their LBC or HBC brief-cases may be what you have in mind.

Re: Man Bags...

+1 on Saddleback Leather. They are the best and truly heirloom quality.

A bit more on the tactical side though is the 5.11 Moab 10. http://www.511tactical.com/All-Products/Bags-Backpacks/Backpacks/RUSH-MOAB-10.html. If you're down with a single shoulder strap design, this one is awesome. Lot's of storage / organization, room for hydration (if that's important to you), really well built, and can be integrated into a larger system like the rush 72 when traveling, backpacking, etc.

Re: Man Bags...

Another for the Saddleback leather bag, I have had mine for about 3 years now and it just keeps looking better every day. I get people stopping me on the street asking me about the bag, it's that nice...

Re: Man Bags...

Timbuk2 makes some nice bags. I looked at one of their laptop bags.

I don't sweat the military looking bags. Partly because if you spend any time walking around a college campus or a downtown area you will see several. Also partly because I have never given up my military grooming standards, so it fits me.

Thankfully military bags don't automatically scream "gun" so as long as people can quickly explain it away, they accept it.

I love Filson stuff. It is the best there is but it can break. I have sent both my extra large duffle and my extra large outfitter bags back twice for repairs. One time they repaired it and the next time they replaced the $400 bag at no charge and no questions asked. I will say though that I am hard on my stuff.

If you ever wear it out sent it back and they will fix it. Good enough for me to carry to work every day for the last 12 years! Filson is good stuff for the workplace and the field. I have both types.
