Ok back again for more. A friend of mine is a cnc programmer and he is going to machine my bolt handle to accept the B.O knob. He needs to know the type of material the bolt is. I told him steel but that isn't good enough. My guess is a hardened steel maybe of 4140. Please guys any ideas would be helpful.

Re: Material?

Well do you have any buddys in the metal recycling business? They could shoot it x ray gun and tell you the alloy. I have machined bolt handles, carbide tooling works fine to whittle it down. It can be threaded with good quality die.

Re: Material?

i don't have my program handy on this computer but i use the same program for both stainless and steel handles. off the top of my head i can't remember the feeds/speeds i used but i probably used feeds/speeds consistent with hard 4140.

Re: Material?

with a little bit of attention, can be cutted with a dremel cutting wheel, finished with a bench grinding wheel, and even threaded by hand : for sure is steel, perhaps not-so-hardended,from what I have experimented_ I confirm that any carbide tool is more than apt to the work_
