My opinion, fire away!
.308, 30-06, 5.56, .270, etc. all became obsolete in the last 10 years or so. The reason is simple: Higher BC bullet construction (longer, more aerodynamic) and powders (more power in a smaller volume) evolved and left them behind. These cartridge designs all use more powder capacity at the expense of bullet length. That cannot be changed.
Sure, you can still bring plenty of meat to the table, but not at longer ranges and always with more recoil, drop and wind deflection than modern designs. As a standard combat round 30 caliber is seeing its demise. The newer designs are inherently more accurate at longer ranges.
It's all about cartridge design. Bullets can't get longer without a weight increase, reduced powder capacity, or new cartridges. In order to get decent, modern ballistics out of 30 caliber rounds you have to go with magnums or the new PRC, all with a lot more recoil. That is why 6.5 and 6mm are the darlings these days.
The 308 is good, not excellent, inside 800 meters for bipedal targets, 400 meters or less for medium quadrupeds. That's basically it.
