Hey guys, i'm wanting to run this by you before i call and place and order. I'm building my wife a .260. I am getting ready to order a stock and have been looking at the McMillan Adj A3-5. I like the lighter weight design of the A3 and thought this stock would be a good fit for her.

Her uses for the gun will be ringing steel as well as her hunting rifle.

Thanks,
Nick

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5

A3-5 is only available with an adj cheekpiece I think, that will add some weight.

For a mixed use rifle I'd almost lean pure A3 since I'm not sure I'd like the butt hook of the A5 on a hunting rifle.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5

Yeah i think you're right jason, the A3-5 is the adjustable model. I guess if anything, i could go with the standard A3, and put an Eagle Stock pack on there for her if need be.

Since this will be her deer hunting rifle as well, and the woods in Missouri are Browns, Tans & Grays that time of the year, i was thinking of going with the marble finish in --

34% Medium Brown
33% Light Tan
33% Woodland Beige

Any thoughts on this combo?

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5

jason was right the A3-5 is adj cheekpice only

its a great stock

what optic are you running? if your only running a 30mm tube 50mm scope a a3 will be fine, if you run a 34mm tube optic or 35mm tubed optic you might need the stock pack, at least that is what i need

the a3 would be a better hunting stock and alot lighter

i love the a3-5 but for your uses would go a3,

what contour barrel are you running>?

mcm is soon to introduce an A3 Sporter only for sendero contour or smaller, now that might be the stock for her

color combo should be great should look something like this, Jason should remember this one

it was equal parts woodland beige, od and brown

It will be topped with either an IOR Valdada 3-18x42 or Leupold 4.5-14x40 Mark 4. Haven't decided, but it will be between those two. And I am actually leaning towards the Leupold, simply for keeping the weight down for her.

The barrel is going to be a 20" Broughton MED VARMINT SPORTER.

Do you have any ideas when the A3 Sporter will be available. That sounds like what i'm looking for. I would like to keep the total weight of the gun under 9lbs. I don't know if that will be doable, but i'm sure as heck going to try.

That is EXACTLY the look i had envisioned. That is a GREAT combo of colors.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5

if trying to stay under 9lbs you will have to fun a mark 4 and probably a a3 edge or manners 90%carbon stock of your choice.

do the math

2.5lb action
3.25lb barrel
2.5lb stock
1.5lb scope

your already at 9.75lbs and that doesn't include bottom metal and rings/base. I would definetly go with alum. rings/base probably seekins.

hope this helps

I knew it would be hard to keep it at that weight. I will definately be going with Alum Rings/Base. So do you guys think the A3-5 would be ok for her carrying around in the woods. As someone else said, the A3-5 would add weight as well. But, aside from deer season, she will be at the range with me ringing steel. Just trying to make sure i get the right one here.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5

What contour is the barrel? If it is heavier, the additional weight in the buttstock of the A3-5 will balance it out nicely. I had Terry Cross install his adjustable cheekpiece hardware in mine. Doesn't add much weight at all.

Re: McMillan Adj A3-5

I shot Mike Miller's rifle with the A3-5 stock and liked the balance and fit.

I am more of a fan of a traditional "neck" like the HTG or the A1-3. If I were to get a stock with the "goose" neck style, that would be it.
