I have a question that I might be over thinking. Having had the Mcmillan A4, A5, HTG, and some HS stocks, I notice the length of pull is usually 13.5". I know this is the average LOP needed for the average American shooter. My question is having picked up the HTG stock the length of pull is 14.25-14.5 or so. I thought this was just that the original purchaser wanted a longer LOP, but after looking at many pics of this stock they all appear to have this longer LOP.

Am I just over thinking this, or does this style of stock usually have the longer LOP? Looking at the M40A1 pics they also seem to have the longer LOP. I was going to have it shortened to 13.5 and bedded when they did the machine work on my build, but am wondering after seeing the others if it is supposed to be that way. Maybe the lower comb would work better with it longer? Any experience, thoughts, or help on this before I decide to shorten it will be appreciated.

I just measured a remington factory wood stock and it is 14", so maybe the HTG (similar configuration) is standard at 14.5".

Re: Mcmillan HTG stock?

Personally I think 13.5 is for midgets. I'm 6' (with hair) and I do 14.5 on A5/A3's. When I had a return M40A1 stock it was too short for me at the standard 13.5.

I think the 13.5 on the HTG/Factory Rem style works better for offhand shooting, but comes up short (so to speak) when prone.

Re: Mcmillan HTG stock?

I have this one mocked up with the barrelled action and it feels okay the way it is, but all my other stocks are shorter so don't know. I am 5'10" but a little long necked maybe cuz I can usually get on a longer LOP rifle and it's comfortable. These other rifles I have with the shorter LOP fit me like a glove though.

I think I twist my shoulders more with the longer LOP to fit me, so maybe it would be better to get it shortened. So I can be square behind the rifle I mean. On the other hand I do plan on using this for some position shooting using the sling so the twisted shoulders would be more natural? I have a winchester model 70 target that has an even shorter 13.25 LOP and it is awesome for position shooting so maybe I am full of shit lol.

I think I will put a sling on it and mount a scope while it's mocked up and see how it feels, that should give me an idea of how it will do for that. Thanks SOBR! Again, lol.

Re: Mcmillan HTG stock?

Definitely add your scope and sling to the mockup to make sure its all good to go together. You're a good enough marksman to know without asking that the rifle needs to fit you, not the other way around.

Play with it and find what helps your NPA the best slung up.

Re: Mcmillan HTG stock?

I know you are right of course, it just threw me when I started looking at the pics of everybody elses stocks (HTG) and they looked to have the same distance behind the comb, so a similar LOP. Then after measuring the factory rem. wood thought the lower comb might be why. But that being said again you are right I should actually get down and try it to see, and fit it to me. Thanks again, and for the compliment, lol.

I will try it in a bit and see what it feels like and post how it.

Re: Mcmillan HTG stock?

13.5" is what McMillan will give you as the default, but that certainly does not make it the right measurement for you. There is nothing special about the LoP for the HTG: yes you are over-thinking it. Just start using it, and get it adjusted if needed.
