Rifle Scopes Mechanical function of Burris XTR2

How solid is the Burris XTR2 in mechanical reliability. Are they holding up to hard use? Are they staying repeatable? I don't want to talk glass quality. The glass quality will work for me. I have S&B, Premier, Nightforce, and Ive looked through the Burris, it will work. I'm building up three new rifles for two kids and wife. The Kids are shooting more comps than me now. I was looking for a scope with good mechanical qualities and I like the Burris price point. I also think the SCR reticle for what we are doing is going to be an improvement over what I have. I need the .2mil marks and a finer reticle. Thanks

The mechanical quality of the XTR2 is great. Tons of guys using them and if you dont care about glass quality, they're great budget scopes.

The glass quality works for me as well. Is it like my Nightforce, scopes, no but I find it similar to my Bushnell Tactical Elite 3.5-21X50 ERS. Both the 4-20X50 and the 5-25X50. Really like the SCR reticle..

At the moment I'd say they're the best value buy on the secondary market. Solid tracking, zero stop, firm clicks, 34mm tubes for $600-800.

Im on the Burris shooting team, so feel free to take my statements at whatever value you feel that implies.

But the cold hard truth of the matter is I have spent more time behind these scopes than pretty much anyone on these boards. I have a 8 or 9 of them off the top of my head in nearly every configuration from the 1-8 to the 5-25. I use them for 3 Gun, PRS, and hunting. I've spent the last 4 years beating the hell out of these scopes in pursuit of those activities.

I've never broken one. I've never had one fail to track or malfunction in any way. I've never had one fail to perform optically. Even though I've had them on the ragged edge while hunting, and at PRS matches where every scope in the usual line up is having a hard time discerning the target.

The glass on my most recent 4 or 5 is pretty damn good. I feel like there isnt anything I cant identify and make a quality shot on that someone with a more expensive optic can. So I'm fond of the line up and have zero fears in trusting them to perform.

It's my honest belief which I voice to anyone who will listen that it's one of the most durable and reliable optics on the market. And a solid choice at its price point.

I have one of the first ones...it's glass is pretty bad. The newer ones do look pretty decent though. Burris/Steiner have a rep for tweaking things within a production model's various runs, so it's no surprise that they "improved" the glass somewhat with whatever tweaks were needed in the erector assemblies. I'm not bitter about it, just a bit wiser about being a first adopter.

Like I said though, the thing tracks like a tank. And furthermore (in the spirit of open disclosure), BD6424 has pushed me to send it in for a assessment and possible replacement, but at this point I feel it'd be splitting hairs. I can see through it, and it tracks. It's not my primary scope, but with its ruggedness, I have no issues whatsoever keeping it as a back up scope or loaner to a new shooter.

I had a couple of the early ones too. The 5-25s I just picked up are night and day from those scopes as far as glass quality. IMO. Tracking......you know.

I had one and liked it pretty well. I used it for a season or two of 3Gun. Mine had glass that was absolutely fine. I had zero complaints about it. I ran several box tests with it, always came back to zero. I sold it to a friend that needed a mid to high mid end scope for work. I liked it well enough that I sold it to a friend, who I work with, for a LEO rifle. There’s nothing about these scopes that isn’t absolutely functional.
I upgraded to a Night Force when the NX8 and the ATACR 1-8’s came out. Those are in a league above the Burris, but so is the cost.

I run a NIghtforce ATACR and Smidt PM2......... I have several of the Burris xtr2 scopes. I have calibers from 375 HH to 17hmr. The most violent gun I have ever shot is a full house 45-70 325ftx out of my TC encore with a 24-inch barrel. Because of the big hole in the barrel, this gun is super light. My XTR has held up just fine on this gun. I am running the 3.5x15 in the GB2 reticle.

I have a 4X20 on a 300WM and a 5X25 on a 338 Edge. The 5X25 has been pushed a lot harder and that particular rifle has been ridden and put away wet on several hunts, banged around in a case on three 5000 mile round trip hunts in the back of a truck. The zero is still true. Took third with that rifle in a 2000 yard competition, during which the scope tracked exactly as it should.

I'm not sure about these comments on the class. My scopes are both bought within the past 2 years. I can't speak before that, but if you think the glass in my scopes is unacceptable, you must have some unreasonable and impractical standards. And I use my scopes in field and low light conditions foreign to many on this board who rarely shoot outside range conditions.

The tracking always seems to be perfect regardless of where the information is coming from. I have 4 XTR2's and one came in a different box than the rest. I got it from a dealer in Montana and it is the only one that doesn't have really good glass. I am guessing it is older. It isn't bad enough that I think there is something wrong, but surely not up to the quality of the other 3.

What can I say, I really love them.

I've had both the early model and a very recent model and the most recent model and stupid amounts of more clear. I emailed Burris, sent the first 2 optics back and were both replaced with the newer. They will fix you up!

I'm not saying the newer glass is TOP TIER glass by any means, it's not, but you aren't paying for that either. It's just better than the earlier models were.

I had and sold the old 2 of the original models (G2 retc) and now have 2 new ones with H59 rect. The new glass is better. BUT not talking glass, as Killswitchengage analysis he did awhile back - "Boringly accurate" comes to mind from his review (the same cant be said for Athlon that everyone is losing their minds over). This year I switched to the 4-20 on my match rifles (sold off S&B, Gen2 Rxr, USO B25, and my 4-16 Henny to pay bills and pay for new baby. This year alone in the NRL I have 3 top 10's in 3 matches. In the PRS I just had a top5 shooting TAC class. In 3 team matches I have 2 wins and a second...they track.

I also like the look of the squared off knobs on the new ones better...not sure why they did that but it looks sweet.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else see a similarity between these Burris XTRIIs and the original Steiner Military scopes?

Old Steiner Military tracked dead on...only scope I've had (so far) that didn't require a correction factor. Makes me wonder if the companies shared the internals and used the old Steiner Military mechanism / design features in the XTRII, while Steiner went M5xi, T5xi, etc...? I know there's a difference in manufacture locations, 4x vs 5x erectors etc, but could it still share adjustment mechanism design?

I just mounted up a brand new XTR II in the 5-25 with the SCR on my 6.5 Creedmoor AR10. And I have to say the glass is really good on this one. It's clear and bright from edge to edge. The quality is good all the way up to 25x.

I'm really impressed with this one.
