Hey folks, Thursday night my Mother-In-Law fell and broke her hip and one of her shoulders. She laid on the kitchen floor for 12 or so hours until my wife came over to bring her down for the weekend. While she drives me nuts (either one), I don't wish that on anyone. She's doing OK after surgery to put a plate in her hip, however at 85, I don't think she is going to be able to go through this again.

Do any of you have any recommendations for one of those medical alert devices?

Thanks,

Sorry to hear about your MIL. I hope she recovers quickly. I got my 91 year old mother a Life Station alert device several months ago. Monthly rate was good and they also have a veteran discount. The unit uses a landline and has built-in battery backup. She hasn't had to use it in an emergency, but the company was quick to respond when she accidentally pressed the alert button a few months ago.

For my mother in law I bought her a silent dog whistle! Hasn’t had to use it yet!

We have life alert for my grandparents. My grandad used it a few times, small falls or chest pain (had a few small heart attacks). It was handy as he refused to have a cordless phone or a phone in his bedroom.

My grandma (other side) said as long as she could crawl outside to have one last smoke before she died thats all she needed (she had quit several years before. but she kept the life alert on anyways.
I think she would have preferred to have died vs feeling like she had to call for help. tough and stubborn.

Apple Watch Series 4 or 5. They have a fall monitor that will contact 911 and text whomever you enter as an emergency contact. Get one w/ cell service and pay the $10/month additional it costs to add on to your existing plan. You can you it as a cell phone w/o a supporting phone nearby as it has its own cell signal. It also has an EKG and heart monitoring capabilities that not only can collect info all the time, it's also promoted by the American Heart Assoc. The aluminum version barely feels like it's there and there's tons of band options. The only downside is it requires some gadget knowledge willingness.

I wish absolutely no harm or pain upon the elderly and I sincerely do everything I can to help where needed.

That being said, I can’t pass this up...
