I was going to order a mil-dot master and thought I'd check to see if you guys thought they were worth the $$ before I put in the order. They look very handy to me but I didn't know how useful they actually were in practice.....thanks.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

If you use a mil reticle scope, then yes, it is worth it in my humble opinion. It is nice for ranging and comes in handy, especially if you don't want to depend on an electronic device.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

I guess that answers that question. I hadn't really thought about it. I'm new to the forums (2 days) and have already gotten a lot of good advice on things (like this) that I hadn't thought about.

The bad thing is I can't find what I'm actually looking for.

The good thing is while I am looking I keep running across other stuff that IS helpful.

I wish I had joined when I first CONSIDERED purchasing a precision rifle.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

$30 for an analog computer that requires no batteries is a steal. I attended a shooting class last summer in which, I crushed a calculator in the rifle case, left an Iphone back in the car before boarding the plane to go to the school. Cooked two calculators out in the hot Oklahoma sun and was left with nothing but my mildot master which performed flawlessly and so fast that my spotter and I were always the first done ranging targets. I attached my dope on the back of my MilDot master, so that my spotter can just give me correct adjustments once he has calculated the range to the target. There is a wieghted string so that he can figure the slope to the target and make any needed adjustments to the range. Slope dope is displayed Mil, Inch and MOA conversions are displayed. It is really a very amazing piece of kit. You can read more about it here and even play with one here:

(I have two)

LOL...In my day it was a slide rule. BUT, it worked, as does the MDM.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

I actually learned to use my grandfathers slide rule when I was in high school. My electronics teacher gave extra credit and would let you use it on tests. Using his slide rule he could beat anyone using a calculator. D-Wood....nice name, I like it.

Im sure there is something. The point of the MDM is that is works no matter what, where or when. No batteries to lose power, water to ruin it, dirt, etc.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

It's 29.95 shipped direct from mildot.com Although its copyrighted, like most things I am sure you can find a knock off somewhere for a little less money, that probably won't work as well. The designer Bruce Robinson donated countless Mildot Masters to servicemen overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, prior to his death. In addition to supporting his widow, it is my understanding that a portion of the proceeds still go back into the shooting community. If you want to save a buck, I see them from time to time in the "Options and Accessories" section. There were two last week. I think they both went for $20.

Cheaper? Its not an expensive piece of kit, in fact for what it does its very inexpensive.. Go with the original, get a MDM.

After reading these, I sure will.....thanks!

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

Check out "Ballistic FTE" for the I phone it's 10 dollars cheaper and has a "HUD" that does the same thing...... But I still own a Mill Dot Master.. Hell get both !

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

for what it is intended, it works perfectly. so ... 30$ is nothing.

how much did you spend on gear that didn't work? -> MDM all the way. worth each dollar/pound/euro.

ps: i got one extra as a small birthday present for a friend of mine. just getting the metric sliders was a bit harder than expected.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

You need two Mil-dot Master's.

Its more important then any ballistic program or other crap people buy.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

Both Ballistic FTE and Bullet Flight have the ranging capabilities. With the added benefit of not only giving you the range to the target, but also your elevation and windage correction.

The comment about batteries and moisture-protection to worry about are valid, of course.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

MDM is worth every penny. So much so that I'm getting ready to order two more, so I don't have to remember which rifle case it's in. As a recreational shooter, MDM plus Shooter for Android gives me everything I need... except talent.

OK, I was just about to ask what's best on Android. I have Shooter, but have not started using it yet. Is that the one to use, or is there a better one?

The problem with MDM is that it gives you only the range (distance to target, plus the angle). What you need is the elevation (and windage) correction - and MDM won't provide it. So you need the dope printout <span style="text-decoration: underline">corrected for the current location and weather conditions</span>, or that JBM app for ipod touch...

Of course if your first shot can be a sighter and doesn't have to actually hit the intended target, then MDM + printout is more than enough to get in the ballpark.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

I echo Boyettes comments and have one in each Long range rifles go bag. The key is learning how to fully leverage the MDM. In my experience most folks never truly learn how to fully use the tool

What more can/does it do besides converting target size in mil's to the distance to it (corrected for angle)? How do you "fully leverage" it?

It just gives you the range, that's all. You'll have to figure out the adjustment - in MIL or MOA - by yourself, using other tools.

<span style="text-decoration: line-through">But if you're asking about MOA-subtended reticle - then the answer is no, it computes the range from the target dimension in MIL and inches.</span> <span style="font-style: italic">I was corrected - MDM works with MOA, see the following post.</span>

Of course you can always convert the units - pencil and paper math - if available time and situation allow that.

Negative. The MDM can be used with MOA reticles.

Look on the right side under Bullet Drop. Notice the section marked MOA. Align Target size with the MOA you measure it to be here. Then refer back to the left side where target range is displayed.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

I had 1 and lost it. They're nice but I also think it's important to understand the 2 most important concepts associated with reticle (and turret) subtension--

1) subtension is ~inversely proportional to magnification in SFP optics, and

2) The mil-ranging formula defines both rangefinding and downrange zeroing with any subtension and/or turret.

Whoops, forgot to say that i glued a Dope sheet on the back of my MDM...

Negative!
Will work with Min/Min systems just as well as mil.

Re: Mil-dot master worth the $$

I enjoy my MDM, its fairly straight forward and easy to use. Plus the manual gives some good scenarios to practice on if you want to work on it on your free time!
