I searched google for the average length of an elk and came up empty handed.

I'd say ranging the length of his head would be easier. Ranging and animals body layin down would just be to difficult to do being turned ( not straight) and not stretched out at all. I have no clue how long a good size bull's head is other wise i'd take a crack at it.

well I used 24" (bulls head) and .9 mils and got 740 for a 90 yrd difference from my first guess
if I use a 7mm wsm and hold for 785, I would think I'd be good to go

I estimated from the nape of the neck to the top of the head at about 30" giving me 841 yards

I only relied on vision memory.....
I have had many elk in the scope like that. ( actually PGS I do not know how you had the ability not to accidently pull the trigger LOL...LOL....) I know, you did not have any ammo..LOL...LOL...

I'll try to get some more through the scope pics in the next month or so before hunting season starts for a little practice.
Maybe I'll have a little contest on three different critters. Closest estimate will get a couple Montana Slings.

PGS- Not only is this fun, but you are doing a great service to hunter and prey alike by encouraging real world testing of one's ability to properly range the animal. Batteries go dead, a slip on a rock might render a LRF useless, etc but proper use of a mil-dot reticule will never leave you hanging if you have practice.
I had a guy miss a nice muley buck (albeit with a bow) because he didn't believe me about the yardage of a shot. People who have no experience in such terrain can often be tricked by their eyes as they have no frame of reference if it's their first time hunting either the specific type of animal or in such terrain.
I bet if you compiled some data on typical sizes of Elk, Mule Deer, and Pronghorn and how many mils they appear to take up at various ranges, you could make a few bucks on selling such data or if $ is not your goal- you would make a lot of hunters' trips worth it if they can't afford guided services and are doing it on their own.

Geez... I gotta see land like that before I get too old. PGS, I hope you realize how lucky a man you are to spend your days in country like that. I'm a proud resident of LA, but that's the kind of views I'd like to hunt one day.

GD223- It truly changes you. I miss Colorado a lot for many reasons, some of which may go with age, but the view...it's like a visual siren's song. It calls you and it's virtually impossible to resist when it does.

I like the idea Pat but I think the "winner" should have to fess up if it was just a WAG or what rational they used for the number. So Scott needs to enlighten us on how he got to 667 yds.

Well, knowing an average size helps. I went with a guesstimate of 28" from middle of shoulder to top of the skull and came up with 711. I was a good tick off as a 4" difference based on what I came up with mattered a full 100m. I'd rather get the wrong answer on such a practice event so I can rectify my mistakes rather than get it wrong when the sucker is in my sights for real. okay... here is how I did it.. LOL see if it makes sense.
I knew what scope this was by PGS most recent purchase
10cm spacing on vertical of reticle.
I am a MOA guy, so I converted. 10cm = 3.94 inches
As much guiding and looking at elk as I have done, I always figure a bull laying down to have a height of 24 to 27 inches where PGS had the crosshairs. This is a mature bull, so I gave him 26" + on height.
so, my calculation went like this...
Bull in scope is about 10cm vertical to back = 3.94 inches
26.25 inch height of bull / 3.94 inches = 6.6624...
6.6624 x 100 yards = 666.24 yards and I rounded up to 667 for good measure.....
therefore, I reached my guess of 667 yards !

Obviously, I do not know enough about elk or mildots so I am very interested in learning how this works...until then, it's LRF for me. Shoot, there's not many places on the ranch I hunt that you could even see an animal laying down that far away let alone get a good shot. You guys are lucky!

no wonder I was so far off... 10cm intervals? I was thinking it was a standard mildot. Now I don't feel so retarded.
Can someone explain the usefulness of 10cm versus standard mildot. I'm all about metric, would love to see us convert to it in the US... but I don't understand the application of a reticule like that.

I'm using a Zeiss, "Quick Camera Adapter", its a slick deal that puts the camera in perfect posisiton to the scope and also pivots to the side so you can still scan and get the focus perfect.
