hello, im new to long range shooting and trying to understand mil dot ranging. the formula's are easy, however, if i read correctly, an accurate mil dot size (in my scope) should change as i zoom in and out. however, my Millett does not, therefore i assume there is one set zoom level that shows a mil dot as a mil dot.

if so, what is this zoom level?

scope is the 6x25x56 fyi

Re: millett buck gold mil ranging help please

If you have a first focal plane scope, the reticle will seem to grow as you power up. basically, the spacing between mills or half mills will seem very small at low power, but look much bigger at high power. on a scope like this, the dots will be 1 mil at any power.

If you have a second focal plane scope, you do not see the reticle change this way. Most have a specific power listed in the manual. Often it is the highest power, but not always.

If i were you, I would try to actually take the scope out, bench it and line it up and map the reticle to actually see what power you want to be on. You could also mil something at a known range and of a known dimension and change the magnification till it comes out correct.

Be aware that even though the power ring says you are on a certain magnification, it may be off. The best way is always to just check it out yourself on paper.
