Mk18 10.3” 5.56 AR as a SHTF truck gun?

The gangbanger was driving an old sun faded, red, ford expedition. I wished for some hard hitting chinese 30 cal with the steel penetrator. The range of contact was going to be less than 40 yards. He was holding his pants up with one hand and had the pistol in the other....
When in practicality would you deploy an SBR/PDW over your handgun?
Think of how often you have your SBR within arms reach, settings and such. Think of the issues associated w carrying it visible or concealed. Think of the weight. Think of avoiding stupid or high risk situations.
Nearly 100% of the time you’d need such a gun it’s because you are doing proactive work or your home is being invaded. Like a poster above said well, unless your PDW is immediately accessible in the driver compartment of your vehicle even if you’re a passenger, when would you possibly carry, need and deploy a SBR in current society? Maaayybeee post-Katrina for a couple weeks or static guard positions like the LA riots w the Korean shop owners.
If you have a “truck gun/SBR” and you have time to get to it you’re either in the middle of the nation’s largest gang fight in history (why?) or you should be smoking tires outta there.
Now if you’re convinced things will go sideways hard core in Nov 2020 or are certain you’ll be in the middle of a Mumbai or Kenyan mall terrorist attack, what type of “long gun” makes sense? Probably something lightweight or more discreet than a 16” AR. The Maxim PDW, Honey Badger, 10.5” AR w LAW folder (bulky), or Sig’s super short MCX line (5.5” 300bo rattler but it’s heavy) etc. This allows you to remain discreet to walk or exfil the danger zone but affords you much greater effectiveness should things go loud.
Then again not too many people ever even need a handgun so if you’re not well trained up w it, no reason to prepare for that one in a million situation when you haven’t prepared for the one in ten thousand.

Short answer is, it depends.
If you're driving around getting groceries and running errands, you'll probably just have a handgun with you as any truck/vehicle gun probably won't be riding around in your lap or whatever. You fight with whatever you have; be it a pistol or a spork. Some of you may know what a team board is, and I can only imagine how many points you'd get for successfully sporking someone.
If you're loading a rifle/SBR/PDW because you know you may end up needing it, we ran in non reg vehicles (see; tactical minivan) and you always had a sidearm with you when mounted. I even adjusted my carrier to have a GP pouch that worked as a holster for a pistol that I could wear on my strong side so I didn't have to do 'the worm' manuever to get to the sidearm on my belt. It's quick, its right there, and for vehicle engagement distances where you aren't dismounted and follow rule #1 of being in a vehicle, shooting through a windshield isn't an issue. BTW, unlike in every movie you saw, the windshield doesn't explode, its actually a pretty big let down. But always wear eye protection when in a vehicle.
Secondly, we'd keep our SBR's or carbines by our feet, barrel pointed forward onto the floorboard with the buttstock wedged between the seats. This prevented the weapon from flying around on an impact yet allowed it to be accessible. Generally if you had zero time to react, you pulled the pistol and if further action was required and you had time and/or you dismounted, you grabbed the primary.
Things like taking the headrests out helped as well.
Downside to the pistol is terminal ballistics and range limitations. Nothing sucks more than dismounting and being engaged at various distances and you have just a pistol. Upside is accessibility and the speed at which you can present the weapon while seated in a vehicle assuming its not buried under your battlebelt.

I hear ya. I get there are reasons in war zones and as a cop etc (BTDT) but I was directly answering the OP suggesting that CONUS your handguns skills should be top notch and a truck gun is a 1% of 1% of 1% type of likelihood of having and needing it etc.
There are times it could come in handy for sure (TX church shooting for example) but nationally it’s a handful of times a year for 300+ million people.
People who might have occasion to use a rifle outside their home probably have enemies they know they have or are caught up in some larger unrest that they knew about when they got in the vehicle, like Katrina. Or perhaps you’re going somewhere you shouldn’t be. You can control most of these things fortunately.
Well its not a 300 BLK nor a 7.62x39, but a Ruger PC Carbine with a Midwest Industries chassis with the folding stock would make a nice compact truck gun. Load it with Federal Plus P 9mm HST or get the 40 S&W and load it with HST and it would be an effective short range weapon. One could carry the same caliber pistol as a back up.

All of the above 6-8 posts are correct, assuming a present day BAU state of affairs...my CCW is more then enough for me 99.99999% of the time.
Assuming a SHTF/WROL scenario, which was central to the OPs initial post, a Mk18 is prob not a bad thing to have....I would also add several other pieces of kit, armor plus at least one other team member to fire the Mk18 when necessary while the driver drives the vehicle and escapes whatever dangers confront the occupants while driving around in thunder dome.

One time, at band camp, we played Modern Warfare and shit would hit the virtual fan non-stop. SHTF is more likely to be economic malaise paired with crime as in Argentina than something larger. Perhaps race and class riots.

Definitely. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about having the right tools for the job. Different environments call for different equipment, despite many tools being capable of multiple environments. Plenty of people get smoked with long guns during home invasions. Personally I wouldn’t use a long gun and it isn’t part of my response plan (I’m rolling balls deep with my KAC SHTF Dildo).
My problem is with the obsession over SHTF and the fantasies associated with it. As I mentioned above, I’m all for the posts where dudes are like “hey I want to build a compact and reliable AR platform. What’s a good checklist and why?” What I hate to see are the ones like how this thread turned because I’ve worked with plenty of dudes who would talk about the same fantasies and kits but are literally the biggest and most incompetent liabilities to exist. It also coincides with the same civilians I’ve met that talk the same way. So it becomes a stereotype and we all know stereotypes are true lol.
