Doing math in your head is great at relatively short distances. At longer distances, it won't suffice. Probably no one tries to use reticle ranging at 1000 yards, but just as an example, with a typical .308, a 20-yard range error on a target at that distance results in missing.
But with a Mildot Master, which works with mil, MOA, and IPHY reticles, there's no reason to do math in your head.
