Rifle Scopes MOA or MRAD for F-Class?

Well, I am old! lol But at least I'm still in pretty decent shape. My neighborhood gun club actually started doing NRL22. I haven't had a chance to really look into what they were doing yet, but I'll make a point of checking it out. Sounds like it might be fun. Thanks!
Since you are settled on vortex as your brand then I would get this, https://www.eurooptic.com/Vortex-Viper-PST-5-25x50-EBR-2D-MRAD-FFP-PST-5257.aspx throw it on the 10-22 and go to town on the match that you already know of and find local and accessible. I bet youll find the "tactical" style of shooting in the nrl22 is a blast.

Once you get around to actually wanting to invest in playing the Fclass game this in-between-now-and-then expense on a scope will long be forgotten.

Athlon Argos BTR 10-40X56. Floating dot reticle, 1/8th MOA clicks, side focus/parallax and around $400. I wanted a Vortex Golden Eagle before I owned this scope. I do not shoot F-Class as a competitor but I train a lot like an F-Class shooter.

SFP, MOA, and high magnification along with 1/8th MOA increments has me shooting .5 MOA to 600 yards my second year out as a newbie.

If you have local NRL 22 matches I would definitely encourage you to look into those. As Spife said a Viper PST will be a great optic and can do double duty if you want to use it for F Class to try that out too. I have shot in just about every kind of rifle, hand gun and 3 gun match out there. I actually used to be a really serious handgun competitor and traveled across the country to compete. That being said I enjoy the NRL 22 matches more than any of the other types of matches I have shot. I would guess it is similar there to the way it is here and you will not find a nicer more helpful group of people. My 10yo son also competes with me and has just as much fun as I do. It is also a really good networking opportunity. You meet people from all walks of life with similar interests. I know I have developed some really great friendships with guys I have met at the matches. In fact My boys and I just got home from a day at the range and fishing with a friend I met at matches.

You know if you don’t mind buying something other than Vortex you could pick up an Athlon Midas Tac in 6-24 MOA and a Midas Tac 4-16x44 In mil. If you give Doug from Cameraland a call I’ll bet he can get you both and keep you right at your budget. The Midas Tac is a whole lot of scope for the money. Really the only thing you give up going from a Viper PST to the Midas Tac is illumination but you gain a capped windage turret. After you bump and spin that turret once in a match you will know just how nice that capped turret is. I own several Athlon scopes and for the money they are pretty hard to beat.

BTW Doug is here on the forum but if you need his number let me know and I will send it to you.

Did Athlon make a 4-16 with the APRS3 reticle in Mil?

Walmart seems to think so, but the details say it has both APRS2 and APRS3, and it's listed as APRS3.

Thanks, but I've already talked to Doug. He steered me towards a Leupold for $2400, but I felt I had comparable options for less money. Until I actually make the purchase, I'm still open to any options. You make a compelling argument - going down in price and getting two scopes. That would cover either situation I might find myself. Makes sense - I'll have to ponder on this. Boy, the more info I get the more overwhelmed I'm feeling. lol Thanks -jim

Amazingly, noone has asked what rifle you have. If you find you like F-Class, you will notice most of the winning shooters are using rifles that are 30-32" barreled, purpose built. When you get to that point, you will know why you want a 1/8 moa clicking SFP scope.

If you presently have a rifle suited to field use or PRS use and you want to shoot that too, it won't detract from your F-Class shooting if the scope is mrad. A throw down Weaver T-36 with a target dot reticle is also a viable alternative for just dabbling in F-Class.

The shooters that can hang in a competitive F-Class match with a field rifle are already accomplished, both in form and wind reading.

Thanks for the input. I haven't purchased yet but am going with a Bergara HMR Pro with 26" barrel. -jim
