First off, hello. Newb here and was directed to this site from another forum to answer this question.

I just picked this up from a friend of mine who unfortunately needed some $$ so he's unloading some of his arsenal.

He says that when he purchased it he was told that it's a PSS model. When I researched I couldn't find a Model 700 .308 with a 24" barrel.

It was originally purchased in 1993 if his memory is correct and all I can find is that Remington offered the Sendero .308 initially in 1993 with a 24" barrel length. Did they release the PSS with the same spec?

I just want to know for sure what I've got.
Thanks

Re: Model 700 Question

Let me be the first to say welcome to the Hide. That's a nice setup you have there. You definitely have a PSS stock. If I remember correctly the PSS was offered in 26" barrel lengths. Maybe the earlier ones were offered in 24" (don't quote me on that). One thing I also noticed was that your barrel looks like it may be threaded with a thread protector attached. Did your friend have the rifle cut, threaded, recrowned, and have thread adapter made? Anyways hope this helps.

Re: Model 700 Question

Thanks for the welcome.

Funny thing that's the same question I was asked about that discoloration on the end of the barrel on the first post on my other forum site.

It looks to me from the pattern to be some sort of barrel cleaner that was left to dry on that matte finish. I don't want to get too aggressive trying to clean it just yet. It has only had 4 rounds fired out of it since he bought it new in 1993 so that liquid had a long time to leave its mark.

I googled a Remington book on the 700 and it stated the 24" barrel was first released on the Sendero in 1993 before it was lengthened to 26" in '94 or '95. Same for the PSS??

They are the same basically as the current ones but 24" instead of 26". It will also have the old style trigger which is a plus.I'm not positive but I think HS precision made some improvement to the stock on the newer ones.It should be 1-12 twist thats about it.

Re: Model 700 Question

i think you could also check the serial number on it too. i'm pretty sure the serial number could tell you the date of manufacture(even though you friend said he got it in '93) I think there was a tread on here some time ago about the 5 and 7 number serials and exactly what you could get from them.(i also think in that same thread that sombody was asking the same question as you about barrel length)
