Why is nobody using the Sinclair overall length tool?
It’s a one time purchase and will work with any caliber out there.

The best way IMHO is the bolt drop method(???). Seat a bullet too long, keep seating until the round chambers and the bolt falls without resistance. Someone is going to come along and link the video which explains it more intelligently.

Wtf is this tool anyway? Some goofy way to find the lands? I’ve always done it as mentioned above. Seat a bullet long. Throw it in the chamber with the firing pin out of the bolt. Look for land marks on the bullet. Gradually seat deeper with an arbor press until the bolt drops with no resistence

Modified cases are a waste, like mentioned above. Make a dummy round and strip your bolt. Find the point that the bolt drops on the dummy round. I do my CBTO with barrels off. To each his own.

I'll take the ease of a store bought modified case all day long. 10 bucks in the grand scheme of the money I piss away on gun related stuff is miniscule.
It's an arbitrary number, you still most likely will find the perfect seat depth by testing.

You guys are arguing over literally tens of dollars of cost savings lol. Even if you reload for 20 different cartridges, that’s 20x$15 = $300, and those will last a lifetime.

The practice ammo, match fee, gas, and match ammo for a 1-day club match exceeds that cost for most people, so why are people arguing over a $10 tool?

I use the modified cases because they’re easy and close enough. I’m jumping 0.020” at minimum, sometimes a lot more. Just because you can get it to within +/- 0.001” from the lands on a new barrel with your method and I’m only +/- 0.005” doesn’t mean anything because I bump it way back from there and test different depths. Then I don’t touch it as the throat erodes.

The other thing, I own my own reamer, so once I get a decent measurement I don’t really even need to measure it on subsequent barrels.

I use the Sinclair OAL tool. I can't think how something could be easier to use. I keep a reference case of each caliber for use with the tool.

The only modification I need to do (and it's really only necessary on large rifle primer cases) is to press in a dead primer in the pocket.

So how many delrin action guides do you own?

Sinclair used to make about 12 different ones for different actions, several of them are no longer available.

The Sinclair tool is pretty similar to the Hornady OAL tool except instead of using modified cases, you just use you're own fireformed case. No alterations are needed. You can still load the case afterwards. They both work in nearly the same way; one required you to either buy the modified case, or modify your own, the other you just use a fired piece of brass.

I think they're both just about as accurate. Both are more expensive than the Wheeler method. They're quite literally the same thing with a slight variation on how you get to the final end measurement.

Honestly, for most of my rifles that standard action guide works just fine (outside of for AR's).

Measure with micrometer, mark with a crayon and cut with axe.
Plenty of error / tolerance stack in every method.

Find the method that makes it best between your ears, gives you desired performance and carry on.

Not every cartridge is for a bolt gun.

Not every bullet can be loaded to magazine length. The tangent ogive is a good example.

I like to do the barrel off method when I can.

Second choice is the modified case.

Third is stripped bolt method.

All three work very well.

Using a fired case with a bullet will also tell you your CBTO.

i guess it did, i'm new to loading for the long range, but i have to say, watching and listening to video's from Eric Cortina , (seems to be a pretty good shooter) i've learned ton of "valueable" information and following his advice on chasing lands, i've dramatically improved my groups due to his advice on this subject and i'm learning how to get the most accuracy out of my gun. Do u have any video's out explaining your expertice on this subject? i'd like to watch them

I don't need to prove to you anything. If you need to fit ammo in the magazine, worrying about chasing the lands is pointless.
