Re: Modified Kukri Knife

I just asked some of my Gurkhas, and they haven't seen one like that themselves. Looks like you might have to have a custom maker produce one for you if that's what you want.

Re: Modified Kukri Knife

you can get blanks and make one yourself. is this what your after?

hey look on ebay too. just to see the ones there. i think if you straighten it out too much, youre gonna have a bowie

Re: Modified Kukri Knife

you're kinda missing the point of the thing if you do that. The wide and full belly is part of what makes it such a versatile tool. You'd be ruining it IMHO. That knife has evolved and served at the edge (pun!) of hard use for centuries. It's the way it is for good reason.

Exactly what my Gurkhas said when I showed them the design. They laughed and said it wouldn't even think of going through the neck of a goat! They were, however, very impressed with the look of the Cold Steel with the kraton handle and kydex sheath.

Re: Modified Kukri Knife

As the Gurkhas said...the purpose of the shape is to always present a slicing edge to whatever it impacts. With a trained swordsman using the edge and not the point, the object is to "cut with a drawing stroke". Which is why the curve on the scimitars, sabers and the Mameluke swords. Chopping trees and vines is one thing...soft tissue is something else.

Re: Modified Kukri Knife

Who makes the best, modern materials, kukri? I've looked at the Cold Steel ones and I'm not so sure about them in regards to quality of steel used, although the blade shape and heft is exactly what I would like.

I might have to save up my pennies and ask if Crusader Forge would custom make one for me... wow... that would be the ultimate kukri...!

Busse Combat just ran a custom Kukri for a while. You might be able to find one if you don't mind spending around $600.

Re: Modified Kukri Knife

I have one of the 1st CS ATC (All Terrain Chopper) "Kukri" and a later version that isn't as fat in the belly but with a pointier point. One I have had over 20 years and it is still hanging in there. may even make some pics when I find the camera. Cold Steel hasn't let me down yet. Yes, they have alot of hype but you do some looking on line 7 you can find some good deals through their dealers. Cutlery Shoppe & Mid South Shooters are 2 I deal with. About the only modification I have done is "blackening/bluing" the steel. Some people like/ some hate ... I Like.

Re: Modified Kukri Knife

Hey Ryu
I like the blade that you drew there and think that it would be a great blade to own!

Yes it seems to be a variation on a theme, but i think it looks cooler that the real ones in the pic.

Just an opinion.

Cold Steel, carbon 5 "Kukri" that was issued a very long time ago. You could bet on it working when needed. Been with me allot of places after I didn't want to take the chance of losing the "Woodsman Pal" Survival Axe the aircrew gave me with the vest after helping teach a SERE course.
