Modifying a Tactical Medalist (add a sling too)

I'm about ready to ramp up work on a Savage 10FP that I'll be stocking with a B&C Tactical Medalist. I saw a vid on youtube where a guy had cut off the "wings" on the front of the stock. I don't plan on shooting the rifle off of bags much so I'd be willing to chop 'em off as well. Anyone modified one of these?

Also, I've got some flush cups for sling swivels. I'd like to install them on the side of the gun for across the chest carry. Not too long ago I attended a carbine class where we had the front of the sling attached on the left side of the gun and then the rear we set it up to come in from the opposite side. That allowed us to easily swap to support shoulder shooting. I'm wondering if setting the cups up int this same manner on a scoped rifle would be of similar benefit.

Give me your thoughts.

I just sanded it down a bit past where I wanted it, and put a small coat of Marine-Tex on it and sanded it smooth.

Flush cups in the foward area of the stock are easy. The butt is tricky, however. You have to do it low enough to avoid the hollow section in the center. Somewhere in the lower 1-1.5 inches of the butt if I recall correctly.

Here is another one, sorry I don't have better pics.

I used a hand-held belt sander. I also slimmed the sides of the stock down quite a bit, as well as sanded in some angle, so the forearm isn't parallel to the barrel (in side view) anymore.

You can also see where I installed some flushcups. The one on the forearm should have been installed another inch further forward - that would have made using the sling (when shooting) a little better.

I ran about 200 rounds through my Savage when it sat in its original injection molded stock. Honestly, it shot well. It would certainly hold 1moa with 150gr Federal Powershok, which I was able to buy for $12/box at the time, before I ever reloaded.

The McMillan stock, though f'n awesome, was simply out of my price range at the time, but I knew I needed a real stock, so the B&C was a no brainer. For the $200 and free shipping I gave for it through Stockys, I got every pennys worth and then some. A damn fine stock, ESPECIALLY for the cash outlay. I skim bedded it and printed a number of 1/4 moa groups with it.

Aesthetically, the BC stock was a huge improvement over the oem one. I didn't have to be embarrassed when I brought the rifle out anymore.

These days, that rifle still sits in that BC stock, though I've long since shot out the original barrel (~6500 rounds). The stock took a big tumble from about 5ft up and landed on cement, which cracked the stock just behind the rear "pillar" area, but a little piece of angle iron and some Devcon 10110, and it's been good ever since.

These stocks are $250 well spent.

Oh: Did anyone notice the Bender PMII 5-25 sitting atop a Savage 10FP in a B&C stock??? The irony!

As long as you have the grovtec cups that are threaded on the OD, it doesn't make a lick of difference where you put them.

The buttstock is hollow, but it is thick enough for ~75% thread engagement of the flushcup.

My Tactical Medalist is currently in shop wth a coat of epoxy setting up for texture. I thinned the forearm some, rounded all the edges, and I like it much better. I did fond some voids in the glass when thinning the "wings", but they were very small. The "wings" appear to be glass the full depth, no signs of foam or filler. Very solid.

I will get some photos up as soon as I get some paint on it.

i have modified the BC stock too
i still would like to make the forend even less fat
when sanding it down there were some holes in the glassepoxy stuff too in my stock. these had to be filled up before duracoating
maybe ill sand it down more somewhen in the future to get closer to a mcmillan a5
