Has anyone ever tried successfully to reduce or modify the palm swell on an h.s. precision stock?I can't find out from there web site if the stock is solid in this region.i have small GIRLY hands and the wrist area seems short as well.i work with composites for a living so doing the work won't be a problem.,but i could be opening up a can of worms if i sand through all the plies.was thinking of building the area with finger type grooves and laying it up with carbon fiber.as a southpaw shooter i am very limited to stock choices.i do own a nice manners t4 on my 6.5x47 but tthis 300wsm is my hunting rig.

I would have no worries doing it.Just be carefull that the stock does not break off when all outside layers might be removed when shaping. After the palm is adapted to the hand size I would rather work with several layers of thin (3-4 Oz) glass cloth with a twill weave and correct finish under 45 deg angle. Overlap the old glass part well and use a very thin laminating epoxy of good quality. Heat cure if possible. Rather good glass in the right place than the stubborn carbon in the wrong place.

I have opened up the barrel channel on these stocks before and had no problems. It is more like a foam grafite once you get though the paint if I remember correctly. Just be aware that once you do that modification you void the warrenty.

I would try contacting HS Precision before I did any material removal. They may have some hints for you to help make it easier.

If you go all the way thru in the grip area...a inletted tube of carbon fiber buried in the middle will give good reinforcement.

If you like the stock but not the palm swell, why not sell it and get a LTR takeoff? You could probably find someone to do a straight trade.

I am with kyabrams66 on this one. Someone would trade you. I know if I had a non palm swell I would trade it for yours. Put it for sale or trade in the classifieds here. HS take offs are for sale all the time. Unless of course you are just really wanting a project to do.

I've modified the grip area by using a belt sanders forward drum and removing the area where the meaty part of your thumb rest, then cut down the swelled portion on the finger side to near flat and reduced the swell on the palm side as well. Customers and I think they fit 100% better.
As you sand you will see the mesh, it will be removed only in a small area, and does not seem to affect the strength or rigidity to the point that I would even worry about strength. Texture the area you sanded with grip pannels and you will have one sweet stock.

It won't be a problem so long as you lay it back up properly with a suitable composite. Make sure you remove enough paint around your work area so your new layers will properly adhere to existing layers.
Other than that, if you open up a void, just backfill with Marinetex or another similar product.
