I recently applied for several positions with the VA for various lower supervisor and support roles, all non-medical type stuff. I wanted to work to help my fellow vets, as well as I was looking at buying out my several years active duty time into the federal retirement system. I well exceed every requirement and played all their games with making sure I would get through the computer based screening, and got a rejection email every time stating I didn't meet the experience requirements for GS-5 to 7 positions, which are a joke. I put in one application for a highly competitive private company position at $24/hr, for which I have exactly zero experience or education for other than being a hard worker, and I'm in the final stages of the hiring process.
My girlfriend has over a decade and a half of counseling experience including four years downrange in Afghanistan/Iraq, has two Masters and a Ph.D., and has billed the VA for years when she ran her private practice for services she was providing to veterans. She has numerous success stories of treatment of PTSD and substance abuse, two of the most common veteran afflictions. She has applied to the VA countless times and can't get through their hiring process because her degrees didn't focus on the dispensing of psychotropic meds, instead on the actual mental health treatment of veterans, and her single interview she had proved this point: If you don't focus on meds as the primary treatment method, they want nothing to do with you. They don't want healed veterans, they want controlled and compliant zombies who are hooked on benzos for life.
That tells me all I need to know about the VA. I don't even have my VA medical card as I refuse to ever seek treatment at one of their facilities. There are an abundance of stories of repeated medical malpractice and managerial incompetence and fraud at the VA. As much as there are outstanding providers who work for them, there is a culture within the leadership to thwart their efforts.
Fuck abolishing ICE, I say abolish the medical treatment side of the VA and let the veterans get their services from competent private medical staff of their own choosing. It is a glaring example that single payer medical treatment is an abomination, where the only goal is obedience towards and reliance upon their government masters.

Yep. Lost my BIL from a fucking surgery for an ingrown toenail. Douche bag idiots didn't read his allergy history, gave him the wrong meds, and it killed him. Fortunately, the SIL won the wrongful death suit/settlement.
Still, it put them is a seriously bad position for many years awaiting the settlement (he was the only bread winner of the family). Smdh...fuck the VA.

Dealing with the frustration of getting treatment from the VA is as frustrating as what you are going through. right after I got out of the Army in '85, I ended up having knee surgery. In that surgery they removed two bone fragments. (And I thought everybody's knees hurt....) Anyhow, the "incident" happened while on the job. So, the state of Nevada workmans comp was obliged to pick up the tab. Anyhow, the process begins to see if it was Army related or not. First thing we do is request my medical records. One shot, according to the VA, was all I got in my four years of being a Ranger. How do they fuck this up?...On purpose I'm assuming. Why pay for a knee surgery if a state is already on the hook.
My doctor back then said I was going to need a knee replacement. After a lot of years and continued wear and tear and finally making the VA recognize it's their responsibility, I got comped for it. But, it's now been a four year fight to get them to replace what needed replacing 25 years ago. Yeah, I totall see what you're saying.
I don't know I want to say abolish the VA, because in a lot of instances they actually help. But, how much are the going to help in the long run? What you need? Or, what they can get by without paying for you. 'Cuz that's sure what it seems like to me. Give the the little stuff and if you need something big it goes up the management chain and they deny it. The VA needs to get looked at hard.

PMI, holy shit is that a tragedy, and a hugely avoidable one at that. The fact something so blatantly malpractice took years to get a resolution is rubbing salt in the wound.

When the medical insurer and provider both report to the same gate keeper holding the purse strings, it's a conflict in interest and it's the patient that loses on anything that isn't black and white.
My step father went through similar as you, his being a stomach injury that never healed which he was awarded a PH for (blown out of a chopper, gunners belt stopped his fall to the jungle causing a puncture in stomach wall), yet the VA denied for years that it was responsible, claiming his pain was either his diet or his imagination. Twenty years of drinking a bottle of Mylanta every other day later, he had a simple surgery performed by a private doctor and within a week post-op he stated he felt better then than he had in decades. It took a dedicated and former VA doctor and Sen Orrin Hatch to get the VA to pay out.
And my statement is for them to do away with the medical provider side of the VA, not the insurer side or any of the rest like GI Bil and whatnot. The level of care can easily be equaled or exceeded on the private side with shorter wait times, no conflict of interest, and less bureaucratic red tape. Oh, and doctors that are actually responsible for their malpractice instead of hiding under the government's security blanket.
As to the main topic from the OP (apologize about the massive derailment), that anyone could do even a minute's worth of union time on the taxpayer dime, especially on the dime that is dedicated to caring for our veterans, is a gross travesty that is unthinkable for me to try and comprehend. I call each and every one of those union members/leaders doing union business on VA time and dime, EVERY FUCKING ONE, a con artist thief who steals from veterans. They can eat an AIDS riddled dick.

I knew this one would ruffle a few feathers. My experience with the VA has been varied to say the least. One Dr. the first I was assigned too seemed bent on killing me with blood pressure meds that caused me to black out. The next was excellent. The next three I never met as they were there then gone before I ever had an appointment. The current one is truly an intelligent and caring sort, very thorough, very thorough. I know he saved my life by ordering bone marrow tests that were not necessarily the next course.
The problems I see are the union employees. They set schedules, they determine whether you can see a Dr. They decide if they want to take a blood draw or send it in. They decide whether to even answer the phone. In fact they have a lot more to say about your care than the doctor does, and they can't be fired.
Then of course there are those that must count beans, AND approve any additional treatment.

My biggest problem up here is the bean counters....funny, same problem I had in the Gov't subsidized airlines.

I had a good experience with the VA when they were caring for my Dad in his last days. He had top notch care. Earlier after he had a stroke, they had a good physical therapist that got him going again so he could go fishing a couple more times before he died. I understand there is a big difference between some hospitals. Dad was in the Roseburg Oregon VA. My nephew also went there for a while when he was kicking some habits and had nothing good to say. I had some follow up care at Roseburg after I destroyed my ankle. It was OK but I was pretty young then and didn't know much. Some of the worst horror stories I have heard are dealing with Indian Health. Just another gov health care system.
Shit. You got me started. They fucked my feet up. I only needed a bone spur removed in 2015 that was causing pressure ulcers when I went walking or hiking, within limitations of my back. He said he'd do it if he could resection the big toe so it wouldn't impinge on the others. He also said he could straighten out my toes which were long and cocked back (but I could literally use them as fingers).
He fucking crippled me. On the left foot, the big toe he resectioned is now too high and the knuckle rubs on any boots or shoes. I can only wear sandals. On the right foot, the two toes in the middle are curved outwards and one is clearly broken, almost at a 90. The big toe rides over it and it hurts all the time, and the second small toe digs into the third. Now I have to have to get special inserts and get to get casts made of my feet for $100 if I DIY it and another $600-$800 for custom boots.
On top of it, the titanium inserts in left toes made them so long that they hit the ends of shoes or pretty much anything. Pressure against it finally ended up causing a rejection or break and that got infected FAST. I felt I had recovered long enough and started doing a few things, not overdoing it though. I went from standing and swaging primer pockets to my toes hurting, stopped, checked 'em out and when I pressed on it clear fluid came out the end. I went to VA. Antibiotics and rest. Four hours later, my ex came home and had to rush me to the ER with a 104 temp. and by the time I got there I nearly died. My toe went from normal looking to the size of a sausage in two hours, skin split it was so big and pus coming out. Disgusting. I got sepsis and that resulted in a blood infection and I was on two different IV antibiotics, the worst ones, one was Vancomycin and if you're familiar with it, it's one of the worst antibiotics you can get. Collapses veins. HORRIBLE side effects for a month after. Kills ALL bacteria in your body, it fucks you up bad. I did get to keep my toe, and two or three weeks later, after it healed up, they removed the titanium.
That was last May. But I've basically been healing or dealing with something ever since 2015 when I fucked up and let them cut my toes. Thank god I didn't let 'em touch my knees or back.
If it happens again, I'm going to demand they amputate both legs and give me the blades and prosthetics. I thought about it last time, I really did. At least guys with those can climb mountains and run. I can barely walk sometimes. Feet to me are a tool, and if they're broken and there's a better option, I'm NOT that attached. It's always painful and always a flip of the coin as to whether it's going to cause serious damage or not if I overdo it, and I don't know what that is. When it hurts, it's too late. Can't feel much in those toes unless it's deep either --if it hurts, it usually means a break or fracture, which I'm getting ALL the time.

He didn't use the money to off himself, used it to eat and was trying to get help to get off the streets. His liver was so compromised that even a beer could kill him. All I had on that card was $100, he didn't ask for money or hint at wanting a handout, and I figured if he was gonna do it he'd do it but at least he could get a good bottle if he chose and do it right. Glad he didn't. I treated him like a friend for three days while the VA treated him like crap; we talked all night and I let him hold the remote the whole time. His story made me cry. The next guy they brought in almost died from a stroke and couldn't speak, just groaned constantly. Phlebotomist came in to take blood and was rough handling him. I told him he had a stroke and couldn't stay still. He told me to mind my business. I told him when he fucked with another vet, a brother, he just made it my business. He said I could do it if I wanted. I told him if I got up to do it and he was just talking shit, then we'd have real problems. So he didn't want me drawing the blood after all, although I'm sure I could have done a better job with just my CLS training from years ago. He wanted to be amicable now, but he also quit rough handling that man, who turned out to be one of those evacuated Korean war marines IIRC. You meet all sorts of former badasses at VA. I have. I hate how VA treats the old and infirm the worst. Like fucking vegetables. Plants. They leave 'em on gurneys in hallways for HOURS or park spinal patients in the glaring sun at noon and leave 'em there half the day. In front of the door, no shade, people having to go around 'em, no privacy. Just absolute disregard for their patients. Theft of pain medication, I'm almost dying and the shit they had me on made me feel even worse and the doctor had doubled my pain meds while there --but I didn't get 1/4 of that. Only one RN was nice, caring and trustworthy. One. And this being in the admitted ward in the hospital where you go right after ER. Not ICU, but almost.

I just don't get a good feeling when I have to show them how to use the equipment in the office or show them how to do a procedure in the proper fashion. Some good ones are just retirees making some extra money before they retire for good, very rarely does a good doctor stay.

One told me I could come in anytime for a back shot if my back went out, he also had a private practice; went to ER two or three years later and requested him. Clean cut, squared away and helpful and accommodating, he now had hair down to his shoulder blades and no longer wore the suit under the labcoat. I'm assuming the private practice was gone. And now he's telling me it'll be at LEAST six months before I can get the shot... Six months is about how long it takes for a back issue like that to clear up but after 3 months you don't need the shot. Had to go to a civilian pain doctor anyway who can do the shot in 3 days, sometimes less, and who can actually prescribe the same medication more than a month in a row. With VA, I was getting random shit depending on who was my doctor that month. I've had one for a few years now and he will work with me online and will give me ANY referral I ask for (I've demonstrated a fair medical knowledge, thanks to my mother and her medical library). Which is good, but only if the specialist is too. And VA dentists? Thank god they're too swamped and my dentist happens to be one of the good ones that volunteers basically. So he bills 'em and I see him. I get implants and instead of just having a tooth pulled, which is the extent of VA dentistry.
The best thing to ever come out of VA since I've been going has been the Choice Program, but they gotta keep it funded. They turned down my dentist's request once, said it ran out of money. I told 'em I no-shit just saw Trump sign a document funding it until it could be unfucked properly. To try it again. Of course it worked then, I wonder if they even bothered the first time.

My grandfather, mother's father, died in a VA hospital. It doesn't get much worse than that. Even back then, in Omaha in 1990 in SICU, they left open and used needles on his sink. Wouldn't surprise me if they killed him. The only thing got right was his funeral. WW2 vet who stayed for the occupation and the Berlin airlift before building the interstate highway system. Starting on the first stretch in St. Louis. Looked like Rodney Dangerfield, sounded like him. Funny too. 100% American.
One of these days they're gonna wind up with a medical version of a bonus army on their hands.

Hard to say what's good or bad sometimes. I know when I came out of surgery the first time in 1988, I flipped out. I was in so much pain, My second surgery in 2000 was like...Is this real? Did I just have surgery? There was no pain. It's like everything was done the right way from the get-go. But, that was a civilian doctor paid for (initially) by my insurance. Wow! If we could get that kind of care for our vets it would be amazing.

damn sorry to hear that Stryker, youre a rockin mother fucker who paid his dues, by all means your care should have been much better, someone should take a ballbat to the cocksuckers who treated you that way, all of them.
i have to say, i use the VA here in Tampa and so far so good, i just cant say anything but good of them, matter of fact, last year i was hospitalized for 4 days and i really should say they saved me
my dad and brother uses the Bay Pines VA in Seminole, not far away, and they also are very happy with their care...

I don't have a good grasp of how the VA works. Took my FIL to the VA today. He served a two-year hitch in the Navy as a radioman after WWII. He's getting a couple of very expensive hearing aides at zero cost. As a retiree, I can purchase a set at a "significant" savings. Will only cost a couple grand each.
