I hit a new spot this morning that Ive not been to in a year & I am happy that there are more than I could shoot in one morning.
I set up right at 530 am w/my montanna flip out coyote decoy set 40 yards from me next to a dry creek & backed into a shrub, foxpro hung in the tall shrub & wetted w/coyote urine.
Well Im next to a large maple tree laying prone in a little depresssion and its not even daylight yet at 545am and I almost jump as I have a bark to my left about 50 feet or so. NO!...way to dark & I cant see anything!
It goes off yapping & barking, but not youre busted barks. Im thinking maybe it smells the pee,
Well all heck breaks loose and I have 5 yapping challanges all around me & CLOSE! I figure at least 100 feet if that...& I cant see them!
They move off about 100yds down the creek & 2 track. I hit the cal and start my barks...yup they all go off and come back a bit, we go around for 15 min like this, then I start to see movements as its now getting daylight. One comes in from my right along the road yapping back. I am also throwing in barks from my hand call. I swing on it and lost it in the tall grass, then I see white on my left at 60 yards and a very loud challange bark..it sees the montanna decoy and goes off on it. I see it in a depression looking at it and I let the 6x45 fly and drop it there. I go right to coyotes barks from my hand call & foxpro and the others sound off for another 10 min then are gone up the canyons.
I still have 2 challange barking at me from 300yards or so, but due to the shrubs cannot see them. Well 1 down anyway.
I move down the canyon 3 miles and start to hike up the hills & look back & see a coyote on top of the next hill across the spot Im at...1/3 mile.
So I turn and fast walk to the other side up the hill and see 9 antelope looking at something...yup the coyote. I draw on it and think 400 yards and cant get closer nas its just plain to open. I dial up and shoot, it spins/falls then is up and taking off like no end. I see red all over its belly & stand up as its gone. I walk that way and its closer to 600+ yards so I hit it low, lots of blood but no coyote. I look up at antelope trotting and see it 1000 yards onto the next ranch fenceing. Its falling & getting up & gone for good....darn it.
I move down the road 2 miles and hike up a small hill & glass to see a mangy one at a cow carcass, yea darn it another 1/2 mile off and cant drive as it will see me from the road.
I hit the creek and stay low make it to about 200 yards & its over a small depression, a heard of 30 or so antelope trott off from feeding around it & keeping a lookout. All of a sudden I look and see it moved 400 yards off and going up the hills. Darn it again!
I throw out some barks on my hand call, its at least 800 yards off and breaks over a creast and between two hills. I dial up for 900 yards, hold the dot on top of it and let the 6x45 go again...Tagged its rear leg quarter and its off on fire. never see it again.
So I counted 9 total from the time I got there till the last long shot.

Re: More of the same!

Well it sounds like a time you wish you had toted in a shotgun this morning for the first round!

I've got a 3-shot Serbu mossy 500 that I'm waiting for the form 4 on now. #4 buck or "T" shot in a thigh holster on the ground in front, for those occasions when they climb right over the top of you coming to the call.

Good looking dog in the pic. It's a shame about the other two, but dead is dead, whether you tote them out or not. It's an invasive species in many places, not a game animal and you're not eating it; they destroy what we love to hunt and eat. Dont' sweat it.

Keep the pressure on 'em!

5SPD,
Nicely done.
At least you're getting out. The coyotes I've seen NE have been mangy. ANd the wind has been howling on my days off.

Good luck and stop by and see me at the big building.
