Most accurate .338LM under $6000?

I'd like to get a .338LM. I'd prefer a .408, but not sure if one is available for a decent price. I'd like a bolt repeater with a 5-10rd. magazine and capable of taking a nice thread on titanium suppressor that won't affect accuracy much. I really need something to challenge me and go out further, and the longer away those plate are when they ring the better it feels.

I've been looking at the MRAD, but I'm sure there are better out there for the price. Perhaps an EDM Windrunner build? Maybe in .408 even?

I was hoping some of you have been down this road and have some suggestions. I plan on putting some good glass on it and would like to have sub-MOA from this rifle; .5 or under would be just superb. The rifle will be used for extreme long range target shooting, I suspect 1000m will be about where I start from with it.

I understand the AI rifles may be the best, but I was hoping there would be some good alternatives in .338-.408 repeaters that are excellent and at or under $6000 for the basic rifle.

Not really interested in single shots or semis, unless some folks have glowing reports about the .338 RND Edge, it comes in at $4000+ and I understand DARPA has an eye on it for a project. I would love the M200, it is at the very top of the list, but double the budget.

So throw me some suggestions and I'll look into 'em. Thanks!

BlackOps Precision and GAP will put a 3/8 MOA guarantee on their 338's. Not really the same thing as an AI, but if you want the 'guarantee' its a good way to go.

I've got a savage 111 lrh and so far doing load development for it has produced 1" groups at 200 yards and easy hits on steel out to 340. I haven't got to shoot it farther yet and with my work schedule it might be thanksgiving or longer. I wanted a custom 338 but figured I might go cheap until I decided I wanted to keep shooting the 338. Reloading has put the 338 at under $1.50 a round figuring brass lasts 5 shots. A 375 or 408 is probably triple that or more.

I see with a $6k budget the surgeon would probably be what I would pick up. What glass you going to put on it?

Was looking at gunwerks this morning, they offer one for 6k with 1/2 moa guarantee. Looks like it Even comes with the nightforce, McMillan a5, there action ect.

I've got a lot of experience with 3 different Surgeon Remedys and 3 of their PSR submission guns. All 6 of these guns will shoot under .3 moa at 100 yards.

Cool, lots of Surgeons. I'll take a look at all these recommendations, thanks a lot I appreciate it. Ever since Google decided guns were bad it makes searching harder.

I figure the glass will most likely be either a USO or a Nightforce. Has to be FFP, MOA/MOA (or mil/mil, I can just do the math faster in moa) ill. reticle, would like a Horus H25, H58 or H59 if possible, but an MOA scale reticle would be fine too. Thinking 3.5-22, I kind of have my eye on a SN-9 also but don't know much about it yet.

Also, what do you guys think of the Barrett MRAD? Or maybe the TRG-42 in .338? And are there good sub-MOA .408 repeaters out there under $6000?

Well for a lot less money you could get a Sako TRG-42.

I've done 5 round groups like this consistently at 100 yards, and yes I know this is a wasted distance on this round but it's usually when I'm just testing a few new loads.

And a 3 round 800 yard group which I doubt I could repeat on a regular basis but at least the gun shows it's capability:

About eight years ago someone posted a photo of a TRG-42 5 shot group on steel at 800m or 850m. The group was around 14cm (< 6 inches).

That has always left an impression for me.

TRGs have great factory triggers too, a non-folder version should be around 3k.

I don't have experience with all of them (just GAP and a TRG), but I bet any of the smith's that contribute to this site (along with AI and Sako) would build you a rifle that would exceed the shooter's capabilities under field conditions.

The TRG-42 is my second 338LM rifle, 1st was a TRG-S. I've been shooting the TRG-42 for a year now and am very happy with it.
My shooting buddy has a much larger budget than I do (or maybe he's just better at fooling his wife about how much he spends), and he has a TRG-42 and an AIAW. I gave him hell for buying the AIAW (though I was secretely jealous). I was suprised to hear his report that he believes the TRG to be more accurate.

Sako's are great rifles too. You can't go wrong with them. I had one in 300 WinMag then traded to someone here on the hide for one in .308 which is now being rebarreled to a .260.

Plus the trg really does have the best trigger out there.

The MRAD is impressive. I have one now and was making hits with it out to 1800 yards on steel right before the 24 Hour Sniper Adventure Challenge. Last Saturday I was hitting steel at 880 at Whittington Center. I'm really impressed with the MRAD.

I have shot the AIAWSM 338 quite a bit too and it is great as well.

I have a Savage 110BA and it has been great for me. If you could swing the cash I would get a Desert Tactical, shot one at SHOT last year and it was amazing! Unfortunately, I am saving up for a Thunderbeast .338 can.

Lots of votes for the Sako TRG-42 and that was one I had almost forgot... I may end up with one of those.

Those groups SigsauerP229 posted were just what I'm looking for. Beautiful.

I'd love a .408, but not seeing too many of them coming in around $6000.

And yeah, it costs as much as a new car once you add in all the other shit... Glass, mags, bag, nice dies, few thousand rounds of brass.

I figure it will be my be-all end-all of long range rifle shooting. I'll put the best glass I can on it, use Lapua brass. Hence why I really would like the .408, but settling with .338LM isn't a bad deal either.

Thanks again, and keep 'em coming! I appreciate you guys' advice and experience with these particular rifles.

Personally, I'd take the 98B over the mrad. I don't see any reason to spend another $1200 on the mrad when the switch barrels aren't even in production.

Find a reputable custom rifle builder and build one.If its done by a true professional you should have a 1/2 MOA gun or better.

I had a trg42 is 300winmag...the only rifle I regret selling. Sako makes good shit and is one of the best bang for your buck production rifles out there. If you got a big budget I'd go with a custom such as a surgeon though.
