Most shooters will never need all the extra stuff a spuhr offers.
For most shooters, it doesn’t offer anything that can’t be had with ARC, seekins, etc etc.
Been running the SIG Kilo 3000BDXs... for the $800-900 sale price you can get. Having a laser that can hit 4k yards wireless talk to my AB devices., and glass good enough to spot impacts + vapor trails at any PRS distance. I don't see how that's overrated....
Does the definition of overrated really apply to products that are just expensive? Sure you don't need a $400 scope mount, but the Spuhr packs a lot of features in a unique design that's stupidly well made.
Definition of overrated is “considered better or more important than they really are.”
For most shooters a spuhr is overkill and has big time diminishing returns. So it would fall into a lot of people considering them “more important than they really are.”
If you disagree, please give an example of what a spuhr gives the average PRS shooter $250 more in value than ARC rings. Not law enforcement or military, the average shooter.
I own and run both because I choose to. But the spuhr doesn’t do anything better for most people.
I thought the barricade clamping systems that came out a while ago were overrated. I tried them on 1 stage and found that they took too long to deploy and essentially were useless if you had a dynamic stage with multiple targets that required panning. After that stage I threw them in the bag and went back to a gamechanger. That being said, I have a set of Area 419 clamps for sale ?

Something needs to OODA when and what or who to shoot.
But, stick around, the fully autonomous terminators will be along shortly. No doubt they will be expensive. As for over rated, we shall see
It seems like game changer type bags essentially killed off that "innovation".
I could see the clamping devices being much more practical if the rear piece was like like a miniature ball head or leveling base that allowed movement similar to a tripod. But...that still might not be any more practical or useful than a game changer type bag.
I guess this thread was bound to be controvercial and invite disagreement because, to be "overrated," the product has to rated high by a lot of people.
I am not MIL/LE, just the average guy. When I buy shooting stuff I try and buy things that will work how I want them to, and not break. I certainly don’t abuse my gear, but if something happens I don’t want to worry about that. I’ve got two Spuhrs and couldn’t be more pleased how they’ve worked for me. Could ARC do the same? Maybe/probably, but I would rather spend a little more for a product that’s known to be stout and robust and not ever worry about it.
saw a guy a few weeks ago at the range with his daughter I though he was teaching her how to shoot when the little umpa lumpa started yelling at her father that she knew what she was doing so I peaked to see how she shot and It was bad , shots all over the board a few on the target just a hot mess this father was taking the time to help show his kid how to do something and with a hell of a set up an ai with the interchangeable barrels and a super nice 5x45x56 snb pm 2 it was a very sweet rig so he and his daughter could have an activity together or so he said and she did nothing but yell and throw a fit at him while he tried to help her. If that ain't useless equipment I will never know what is . I hope her attitude is different and that was just a really bad day or she will grow out of it , but I would not bet on it .
Even a Nightforce scope would break before ARC rings. There are a lot of good options now for mounting. I agree, you can’t go wrong with Spuhr but you are not giving anything up by using other mounts if you don’t need the attachment points.
I really don't understand the spuhr worship...are they great? Yes, no one is saying they aren't. I guess all of a sudden though, when a new (more expensive) product comes out, then all previous (less expensive) products become obsolete. I mean, i know i am constantly having to re-zero my rifles because of the nightforce, badger, and seekins rings and mounts i use. Those things are absolute trash. Won't hold zero. Won't return to zero. They even crush my scope tubes. Funny thing is, they never started doing those things until spuhr came out...so weird.
As an owner of many spuhr mounts, I can promise you most have them because they “look” rugged.

I've never felt the need to own Spuhrs, my ARC rings have been 100% reliable and I love the one bolt clamshell design.
If I did some NV shooting and wanted to hang some gear off my scope mount (SiCo Radius, Wilcox Raptar, etc). then I think the Spuhr has some excellent features that would be well utilized.
For just PRS/NRL type shooting, there's no real reason to spend an extra few hundred dollars on Spuhr's, unless you just want to. I don't think anyone in this sport would fault someone for spending more money.
Exactly. Spuhr has additional features that drive the price up. Additional features does not mean additional quality or value unless you need those specific features. Like you or someone else has already said, most shooters don't need them.
By all means, if you want spuhr, get it. Even if you don't necessarily need it. But at the same time, don't act like it's the only quality scope mounting solution out there. That's why people on this thread are saying they are overrated.

We see more issues with rings than with the scopes they are mounted in. Even in the discussion, I had at SHOT with Leupold, based on some of the testing we did during classes. (We record the data). Leupold and I both discussed inferior rings binding up scopes.
When we first had a rash of Vortex scopes not tracking, Scotty P called me at the airport, his first questions were about rings. Tracking them moving forward, we found the rings were the issue in 65% of the situations where the scope was not tracking correctly.
That is WHY we get better products and pay a premium for them.

A recoil lug on the rail works too
The bigger the rail the bigger the issue, we have seen the McCann Rails shear off on 300WMs all the time. Not so much the smaller ones, but a recoil lug on the rail is not a bad idea for bigger guns.

I think mounting a $3k scope in a $250 set of rings or $400 mount are about equal.
If you compare to the Spuhr rings instead of the mount that's bigger and uses more material to produce it's less than a $100 difference in price.
There's a lot of shit I'd classify as overrated before a Spuhr mount.
For example, a $150 accuracy first bubble level.
