They used to use something like that in Africa.Recoil of a 12 gauge from hell. Via http://Gif-Finder.com
Several gunsmiths have been collaborating on the “12 Gauge from Hell” project since at least 2006, maybe even earlier. They use. 50 BMG casings, which they blow out by fireforming to straighten the case, effectively removing the neck and shoulder. Then they use a lathe to turn down the extractor groove and replace it with a screw-on rim that fits 12 gauge chambers.

Think of it as a 4-inch super-magnum. They have to use bolt actions or falling block actions to contain the pressure, which is higher than any normal 12 gauge but still below rifle-cartridge levels.
In a Savage model 210 with a heavy 31 inch barrel, a 750 grain solid lead slug reaches muzzle velocities faster than 2,500fps. A 1 3/4oz projectile. In the stronger falling block rifles, they claim to reach 3,000fps. That would yield ~15,000 ft-lbs of kinetic energy.
A standard AK yields ~1,500.
A .375 H&H magnum firing a 350 grain bullet at 2300fps yields ~4,100.

1 3/4 ounce @ 2500 FPS
12,000- 15,000 Ft/ Pounds
That's a lot more than a shotgun
Winchester Super X rifled 12 gauge, 2 3/4" slug from a smoothbore barrel will have around 2,800 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle
I have no idea what a shotgun does to an elephants brain.... I have never heard of a PH using a shotgun while hunting elephants

We must be able to arrest women before they commit prostitution. By registering vaginas and knowing who has them we can do that…If they have vaginas, they are pretty likely to commit prostitution.
And a German MG-42 AA Tripod... nice bit of kit right there!Alex

Well, since you shoot literal cannons, you're probably qualified to answer this. Even using hard cast bullets, would a lead slug actually survive hitting something with that much energy? It doesn't do much good if it hits, penetrates 2 inches, and shatters before reaching vitals. An 1884 Holland & Holland 8g Paradox. The Last 35 Years. / Westley Richards

The 'slugs' were not like the hollow soft rifle slugs we shoot today. They were .70 Cal (or bigger) solid round balls. Massive weight behind them. Even hitting a skull, they would simply shatter everything. They would go through hair, hide, bone and cause massive hydrostatic shock damage.Well, since you shoot literal cannons, you're probably qualified to answer this. Edit: I mean the 12 gauge from hell bit. Not the 8 gauge.

A few years ago a state legislator from somewhere in the Midwest (I forget where) declared that if we just banned the sale of high-capacity magazines they would eventually be used up and the problem would go away.Unbelievable that a state senator can think this way!
Too bad the clerk didn’t stop shooting after the guy went down. Those 3 extra rounds are going to cost him unfortunately.
So they thought they were like cap gun ring mags, you just threw them away when used? You can't make this stuff up!A few years ago a state legislator from somewhere in the Midwest (I forget where) declared that if we just banned the sale of high-capacity magazines they would eventually be used up and the problem would go away.
Somebody pointed out that one could just load fresh bullets and re-use them, and she deleted her Twitter account.

Bet he bled out on that one....
The perp did not drop his weapon and it was still not visible. He was still moving and could be trying to bring a weapon to bear. The clerk can enunciate that he was afraid for his life and did not know the status of the perp who was still moving and could be trying to attack.Too bad the clerk didn’t stop shooting after the guy went down.
