Early '80s, I was a shift Supt. in an underground mine in the vicinity of the test site. By that time all testing had moved underground and the shots restricted to less than 200KT. We would get a notice of a scheduled test, then just prior to shot time receive a phone call to verify to the voice on the other end that all of our underground personnel were in what we, as the mine operator, considered a safe location. Once I had a hard time contacting one of my crews and held up the shot for about 5 minutes. Felt bad and always wondered what that cost.
I would steady a plumb bob from the back, about a 12' string, and then see around 4" of swing . An all clear call would come through and we went back to putting rock in the box.

All the guys in blue shirts, they looked like Mexican navy guys. From what I remember, that color blue is what the navy uses.
And this, children, is how we have tritium night sights. Great Americans who mined areas of fallout for salvageable material.....

I don't know...maybe is was the element of surprise or shock. But I pray to God I never get so old, weak or stupid I would stand there with my hands by my sides like a fucking idiot watching while my wife protects me. This image alone should be "game over".
