I have had the pleasure to meet and listen to Mike Rowe speak several times. His message about working harder and smarter not work smarter not harder is spot on. Unfortunately too many schools refuse to even entertain his ideas and just want to push the college route and debt in students.

Flew a Huey through something kinda like that once . . . .

And I am betting it was not shot off in the spirit of celebration, independence and American Spirit... though there was probably some revolutionary fervor going on there... Just not all that Jeffersonian.

You're a better man than I, KS! That took some cojones, for lack of a better word.

Masters degree behind me... I want to learn an instrument. It's now between banjo and bagpipes. This is really tipping me towards the instrument of my highland roots...

Cheers,

I had a Corpsman names Chief McMullen who played the pipes and they are kick ass for sure, and even more bad ass when they blow flames! But I love me some 5 string:

But then again me and my family come from the hills of Eastern Tennessee...

My old friend, Dan Titus would have liked the flaming bagpipe above. Alas, he died several years ago.
Dan has a website pipesoffire.com featuring bagpipe music for sale, with the proceeds dedicated to those sailors who died in service. Check it out.

My better half is utterly against bagpipes... Not that she doesn't like them. But doesn't like them played badly, which is inevitable for at least several months as I learn.

Then again, there is a world class banjo instructor living 10 miles from me... the pipes instructor guy is 30 miles away.

Of course, I think I'll do better with the pipes than with the 5-string. And as a kid, our neighbor Mr. Angus used to play the pipes at dawn on weekends. Some of my earliest memories are of foggy mornings in the valley with the pipes resonating around the area. All the farms got to hear it. It's something I just loved as a kid. Just an amazing sound at the dawn.

So what say you guys? Pipes or banjo?

Cheers,

Sirhr

Damn, the sounds of pipes echoing across the twilight is a great thing...

I say if you are of heavy Scottish heritage then go with the pipes and some pink ear pro for your better half...

OH, and some Balvenie 21 for a prepratice warm up!!

I love the banjo. My mom played til her fingers quit working a few years back, she's 87 born and raised in McCreary Co Kentucky. I'm trying to pick it up at this late stage but wish I would have tried it earlier. As for the pipes, I sure love the sound. Nothin stirs my soul quite like the bagpipes. I guess it must be genetic. Smart to pick up some instrument and learn it cause when your dick quits workin' you need an outlet.
