During winter training in the Marines we just built snow caves. Way easier.
I have built a few igloos. After cross country skiing until 2 pm or so, never got the igloo finished before dark. However for night #2 they were great, very warm. We could cut spruce branches to build a 4" floor, so snow from our clothes would fall through the branches. Smelled like a Christmas tree.
