The UA Steamfitters have had women in the trades for many years... Several I know retired and then went on to teach at our Apprenticeship schools... Excellent TIG hands as well as Orbital Welders and PVDF (George Fisher machines).... Those that did not weld were Steamfitters and their math skills were always ahead of the guy's..... But again, in all fairness, every person has a place. That was the Supervision's challenge to put the correct crafts person on the task they were best suited for...My company produces capitol equipment for industrial use. It's installed by tradesmen (plumbers and electricians). A couple times a year, I'm asked to go out and coordinate installation.
For 30 years those tradesmen have been 100% dudes. Since coming back from covid, about a year ago, there's been quite a few chicks. I don't have a problem with it. Just an observation. Any of you guys working trades noticed that? Was it gradual? Or all of a sudden in 2020?
Not to ruin your point with facts but go where polar nears live and you will see them doing just that at town and research station trash dumps.
The best welder where I worked on the Marine Base was a female. She had apprenticed at the Alameda Naval Shipyard at 17 and after it closed she reloacted to 29 Palms for work.
