Way back in Jr High, our science teacher put a big photo of the Milky Way up on the board. He started talking about the speed of light, how many stars were in our galaxy, and where we were located. The whole class was in awe at how tiny and insignificant in the cosmos we are. I raised my hand and the teacher called on me. I asked “Where’d we get a photo of our own galaxy?” The teacher froze for a moment and the whole class looked at me and then back at the teacher, who said “Good question…”

If you were to travel at the speed of light, from where we are in the Milky Way to the Black hole in the center (sagittarius A) it would take 26,000 years.
