The smaller the town or county the more important this becomes. Children and family are gauged by thier last name and it can take decades for one person to pull out of a shitty one. Fathers have more responsibility than they realize or even want, but when you put on the ring you sign up for all of it.
What he said ^^

We have a fellow who lives up the road. He may be the most despised, disliked, despicable fellow who has ever walked on the ground we call Louisiana. This is no exaggeration. He has gone beyond any normal expectation to be a real horses ass.

His niece build a home about four years ago just ‘down” the road, not far from ours. She has her ways as do most of us, but she is nice enough, Three of the four main girls of the neighborhood have formed a bond and a group, my Brenda being one of them and this niece the other.

Well to be honest, this lady reports that despite close relationships, he has so put her off that she has not spoken to him in over two years and they can all but see each other’s homes from the other.

Point. When this lady (whom for sake of changing the name to protect the innocent a Ms. Smith, (or is it Brown?) and her dad went around the community to introduce themselves, they causally mentioned their relationship to Mr. Horsey. And as @lariat reported, the local people became very off standish to Ms. Smith and her dad. Mr. horsey’s name proceeds itself.

Remember this the next time you dad’s and uncles and grandfather’s have dealings with others…..Honey gets more flies than vinegar. Your children may have to live with your consequences.

Caveat, After not speaking to him for well over five years, with the death of a beloved neighbor, who was one of the few people he was close to, I did go to him, shake his hand and offer condolences. Not that I am any great loveable person (tend to be the local grouch myself, proud of it too :D ). But sometimes we have to swallow our pride, and even our dignity. Our children depend on it.
