Frank was an awesome man. If anyone wants to get to know about his life, here are (IMO) the best biographies available:

https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Don...8&qid=1524830271&sr=1-22&keywords=frank+zappa

https://www.amazon.com/Frank-Zappa-...8&qid=1524830271&sr=1-26&keywords=frank+zappa

This one is somewhat comfortized, being co-written by Frank, but worth a read:

And a quote book:

If you don't know his music, you're going to need quite a bit of time to commit, due to the extensivisity of his catalog. (I invented that word in his honor - he also has an asteroid named after him)

Anyone able to tell me exactly what's going on here?

That’s an automotive suspension spring which he’s trying to compress (improperly) so it can presumably be assembled onto a strut. The board is there to protect his face for when that spring gets loose. Darwin Award prospect.

Back to the automotive springs... a Ford Explorer weights 4,400-5,000 pounds- so the front spring needs to be compressed by 1,100 + pounds to get it to fit into the car.

Instead of using the correct spring compression tool it looked like woodworker clamps.

The the compressed spring slip, well 1,100+ pounds of compression can launch a spring that weights 10 pounds or more

I wouldn't wanna be anywhere in shouting distance of that idiot. You can see how he's already got the spring starting to compress unevenly. At some point, he'll prolly get it compressed enough so one of the woodworking clamps slips free. Then the strength of his arm is all he can count on to save him as that spring uncoils. I bet "all in" against him.
