And yes, he did host SNL, once. In fact, I recall one skit where he set it up as the "censor tester." He even warned the censors that he'd be doing it and for them to be ready. It came in the form of him sitting on a NYC front stoop reciting "nursery rhymes" to a 7 y/o kid while kid music was playing in the background. From what I recall, the censors did a pretty good job. The only thing they missed was the reference to "poon tang." Maybe, by the standards back then, it just wasn't censorable....
