5 speed Ferraris have reverse above first…like most racing inspired 5 speed shift patterns.Nope. Of the 5 manual cars I own right now, 3 of them have reverse directly below 5th gear.

Yup, that's usually called a dog leg pattern. Lots of homologation cars use that pattern as well as cars that manufacturers want to have a racy image.5 speed Ferraris have reverse above first…like most racing inspired 5 speed shift patterns.
“Straight” First to second shifts are great for 0-60 times but are not as important as the H pattern where it counts while on track.
Add to it you never go from 5th to 2nd so there is limited probability of jumping to reverse if something goes wrong.
Big burnt ones
Probably depends on the car/transmission.
One I recall having it was off to the left and up, parallel more or less with first.
Shifter knobs might show straight down, but all 5 speeds go far left or far right outside of the shift pattern.
Adding to the dog pile which will eventually bring DirtyD’s wrath down upon us all; Volkswagen has used a “down and over” pattern for years; requiring you to push the shift knob down towards the trans tunnel, then left and back/down.
Fiat also has a push down hard gate into reverse.Volkswagen has used a “down and over” pattern for years; requiring you to push the shift knob down towards the trans tunnel, then left and back/down.
My old VW Jetta wasn’t quite as much fun as I bet that would be.Fiat also has a push down hard gate into reverse.
Spicy Fiat with such a shift pattern.

I have a Jetta and an X1/9, can confirm, the X1/9 is twice the fun with half the horsepower. I hope to be making 70hp right now, but its a blast, second most fun I've had in a <100hp car.My old VW Jetta wasn’t quite as much fun as I bet that would be.![]()
