Due to the time / date difference down here I did not get to participate in that epic, had some good comments to make but it was too late by the time I caught up. At one stage pages were being added faster than I could read them on the phone at work.
She didn't 'get bars'... she was given the hat by her personal wardrobe stylist, clothing manager, style coordinator and PR agent... because they completed some kind of look that they thought polled well.
Doubt any of them even have the foggiest what it means. They probably think it's that silly "Gay Support" decal they all put on their Prius's and Subaru Forresters.
If anyone asked her about it... she'd have no clue.
Hollywood, right there.
Contrast with guys like Bing Crosby and Martha Raye.
On the subject of which... Col. Raye was the only woman I know of authorized to wear a Green Beret. There used to be a monument to her at Ft. Bragg, near the SF museum. And she is buried in the post cemetary at Bragg.
Her rank and Green Beret were honorary. But she was a 'working' nurse when travelling with the USO through three wars. Working long shifts at great personal sacrifice, she was known for pulling all-nighters prepping patients and working as a scrub-nurse, orderly and surgeon's assistant. Then she'd go on stage... catch a bit of sleep. And be back on the hospital floor. And she never shied away from going to 'hot' places.
For this, she was blacklisted by Hollywood. Ended her career doing Polident commercials, because the assholes in TV and movies wanted to punish her for her support for the soldiers in Vietnam.
