About 10 years ago at the Station I was sitting on the bumper of the rig in the bay. A few of the younger guy's were out there too,beautiful summer Saturday. A couple youngish girls (over 21,under 25) stop to talk. With the younger firemen of course. Anyway one sits on the bumper with me and asks if I'm still a working fireman and I say yeah I am. Then she asks how old I am and I tell her. Next thing she say's Wow your in good shape I'd do you in a minute. My reply "That's good Dear because that's about how long it might take" She laughed.
Good work, but never sell yourself short. Should have told her about how much more you have learned over the years and if she’d like to see. ?
Exactly. I'm now looking at our new guys that are 21-ish years old. I'm biologically old enough to be their dad, almost been on the FD since before they were born. Sometimes my age group has to remind them "we know stuff".
I would always tell those guy's I have more time on the "floor above' then you have in the Fire Service. Another good one was we got ice cream in the freezer longer than you've been here.Exactly. I retired as an electrical lineman with nearly 35 years of service. I helped train lots of guys younger than my service duration. Had kids older than they were. Had bosses younger than my service time even. The successful ones ask for the older guys help and support. The not so successful ones tried to change the world before getting dry behind the ears!
My oldest Son went to work for the phone company as an installer. Went to school at night, got a degree and got promoted into management. He calls me every so often and ask me how to break some kind of news to guys like me thats been there longer than he is old. Kind of funny in a way. Kind of good in another way that he's smart enough to try getting along with his employees. I've tried to offer sound advice.
