Lots of gay folks lead "cover lives" (i.e. "married" heterosexually, have families/children, and do precisely what your Marine colleague did so that they can enjoy life and not be condemned and ostracized from main stream traditional "heterosexual" activities (military service, acting/Hollywood (in early times), businesses, etc. etc.). But, secretly, they are LGBTQ and still keep themselves "in the closet." Could that have been the issue with your Marine colleague? His only fault being, he got caught. Sloppy.
Trust me, I'm 100% straight. I have nothing against LGBTQ folks (we have had them in our family long before LGBTQ was even a thing). Not me. And I have no issues with them as long as they don't try to beat me over the head with their identity (i.e. "wokery", etc.) or proselytize young children especially in our public schools, or attempt to infiltrate sports as transgender. Play on the team that brung ya.
PS. Was your colleague an "officer" as well? If not, the court marshall was probably for an "improper relationship" with an officer/enlisted....
