It appears that deceased was the father of a baby with GF.
My guess, deceased's GF moved back in with her dad and refused to let deceased see his kid. The now dead 22 year old BF started to freak out, because he loved his kid, and wanted to see it. Yes, it happens to fathers.
News hasn't given much information, other than, GF's dad shot through door.

That's a very poor assumption on your part. I read numerous stories about this and didn't see anything about any kids. Even if they had a kid together that doesn't give you the right to break into the house. The two had been broken up for 18 months, that is plenty of time to go to family court and get custody sorted out if there was a kid. The father didn't shoot through the door. He warned the kid he had a gun and waited until the kid forced the door open to fire. The only difference between that video and what would happen at my house is, I use a Remington 870 with 00 buck shot, not a handgun.

Most likely because the door was open and homeowner was standing to one side when he stood his ground. That's what I would have done.
IMO someone is trying to breakdown your door, it should be self-defense...open or closed.
