As was already pointed out, a copperhead has a much more triangular shaped head. Furthermore, the diameter of a copperheads body with relation to its length is a lot greater. That means that a copperhead as long as that corn snake is would be at least 2” diameter at center, if not more.

This is true and helpful if you are viewing them in a terrarium. When in the wild and startling you while gardening, say while you have a shovel or hoe in your hand, you are rarely looking at their eyes.

Interestingly, I have found a shovel or hoe can be used to pin their heads allowing you to safely grab them by the neck right behind the head. I’ve done it many times. Of course when I grew up anything was fair game to be caught and become a pet.

Furthermore, there are exceptions to the "eye" rule and you wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of that. See this article. Just as there are exceptions to things like the "Coral Snake" saying: "Red Touch Yellow... Kill a fellow. Red Touch Black... Venom Lack." That saying is really only valid in North America and in the Southeastern US in particular. In other parts of the world there are pattern variants to coral snakes that defy that saying.
