I once had a relatively expensive upright bicycle pump, and due to no other options, used it to inflate a fairly large truck tire. It took a looong time, and the pump never worked again as I overheated it and wore it out. Not a fun day.

Some mechanics are smarter than engineers.
I mean if it did not need those parts . . . and still works - why would the engineers design it that way?
Mechanics are smart enough to not put service and wear parts behind major components that must be removed for replacement or service. Unlike engineers.
Engineers are smart enough not to do that either. That’s forced on them by the design mandate given to them by companies wanting predetermined performance /economic goals.
Also helps when the engineers and designers know they'll never have to actually work on it in a real-life scenario.
