America's primary warhorse on the homefront during World War II. Over 10,000 horsepower and 140,000 pounds of tractive force. Unmatched until the 1960s when General Electric built a very limited series of jet turbine dual articulated units also for Union Pacific, and the turbines were retired after just a few years due to the extensive maintenance they required to keep running. The first 'Big Boy' 4000 series of 4-8-8-4 locomotives rolled off the ALCO production line in 1938 and by 1941, 25 of these beasts were thundering all across the western and central US, hauling thousands of tons of coal, diesel fuel, heavy guns, aircraft components, ship components, tanks, and trucks to the ports on both sides of the country heading off to the war front in Europe and the Pacific. After 1950, these same locomotives were responsible for transporting the parts of the Atlas, Centaur, and Titan ICBM rockets and their silos from specialized manufacturing plants all over the country to the sites where they will be assembled and form the primary line of America's nuclear first response deterrent force.

Union Pacific Railroad's Big Boy Number 4014 was restored in 2016 and returned to mainline and tour service as part of their Making America Great Again On Rails program. Along with Challenger number 3985, these two behemoths of US rail transport are different from other restored steam locomotives also in service on other Class 1 railroads in that 4014 and 3985 are still routinely used for mainline service to provide additional tractive effort for large trains traversing the steep grades of Sherman Hill and the Wasatch Mountain Range. Trains on these two particular grades struggle to maintain operational speed even with spaced diesel locomotives delivering distributed power and 3985 and 4014 are often positioned at parallel sidings to shunt the trains over the grades before they resume their journeys across level land with normal power.

I had the privilege to spend a week in Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. It was a truly humbling experience, and the local people are amazing as well as genuinely sincere in their gratitude for what was done for them. If you have any means to go and walk those hallowed grounds, it will change your life.
Grandpa was a first division marine in the pacific ww2. Certified battle hardened guy that never really made it all the way back from the war… in his later years, he kinda inherited our little Pekingese dog, wicket. That dog changed him. Big time. I remember standing there with my jaw on the floor when he was driving away, holding Wicket up in the window and waving goodbye with wicket’s little paw. Can only imagine the stories that dog heard on the road.

#4012 is on static display at Steamtown in Scranton PA. Just standing next to it is pretty awe-inspiring...it is absolutely massive.
