The road was probably slick from one of them crying about being improperly passed.
Been there done that. Use to race crits every weekend until I went flying in the final sprint when the guy in front me went down. Luckily the course was wet and must have slid 30 feet on my side. Wife questioned whether I should continue racing while I was scrubbing grit out my road rash. Didn't race crits much after that.
I do not ride on the road, but scrubbing dirt out of open wounds after crashing when mtb'ing sucks. I can only guess it would be worse on the road.

If you must know...
I've been held at gun point, shot at, robbed, stabbed, had someone try to run me over on several occasions and I'm not on here bitching about it.
In fact I laughed at the guy robbing me.
