My dads uncle was merchant marine in ww2 crossing the Atlantic in the beginning of the war.
As we know we weren’t prepared and they put anything that could float in water to bring supplies.
His boat was more of a river boat of sorts and had a more round hull.
Besides the constant fear or being torpedoed and being left behind, everyone was always sick because of the rolling. He says guys who had been crossing and real offshore men who were drafted would throw up.
You wouldn’t sleep in your hammock because you’d hit the ceiling and you always had your life vest on and tried to stay as close to the main deck as possible so you could get out if hit.

They have the last surviving WWII Victory ship. It was open for tour when I was there a couple of years ago.
At that point they said they took it out for harbor trips with passengers a couple of times a year. Would be well worth it given your family’s history.
Interesting tidbit. The engine room for the movie Titanic was filmed in that ship.
