The OTHER Hog: The M-60 Patton Main Battle Tank

The M60 line of US battle tanks in service between 1955 and 1982 were the final apex evolution of the World War II tank frames and layouts of the Pershings and Super-Pershing heavy tanks, equipped and evolved for use on the rapidly changing and technological battlefield of the space age, and was the first tank class in the world to be given the MBT or main battle tank designation. In order to be an MBT, a tank is not just an independent fighting vehicle, but a modular, mobile battlefield strongpoint that can perform a variety of combat support roles as well as function as both a mobile fort for infantry as well as a turbocharged battering ram during high intensity operations. The M-60 filled all of these roles. A large number of M-60s were also exported to a number of countries including Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, and pre-revolutionary Iran and to this very day, a majority of them are still in active duty service in these countries, having been upgraded with modular and ERA armor as well as 21st century computer tech. In the USA and Canada, a significant number of M60 tanks are owned by civilians and historical societies who routinely take these vehicles to a variety of events.
