Several manufacturers do this.

On one hand, yes it’s retarded and a fucking pain in the ass. Just replacing a starter should not take 10hrs and include an extra $400 or more in additional parts

However…

Starters haven’t been a consistent problem(at least in my experience with German cars) for a while. And manufacturers need to come up with increasingly clever packaging ideas because of the fucking stupid-ass laws/regulations imposed on them by the epa and other related regulatory bodies. So when something like this does need to be replaced it’s not a bad idea to replace other components while you’re digging through the layers of the engine bay. You may actually end up spending less in the long run with one larger repair bill instead of stringing numerous smaller repairs together and having overlapping parts/labor

Forget the year range and model (maybe an M series) that required pulling the engine to replace the front crank seal. Perfect opportunity to do an LS swap.
