I am new to the idea of medium and long distance shooting. I would like to try this part of the shooting sport out and am laboring under the decision process of what type of scope to buy first. Reading many of the stickies and relative posts has lead me to the following idea.
Given the respective pros and cons with variable power front and rear focal plane reticles, added expense and drop in reliability for variable scopes I have begun to believe that a fixed 10x or 14x or 16x might be the "bees knees" for a beginner......if one would add a small red dot to the package. I envision a Burris Fast Fire or Doctor or Aim type red dot fixed to the scope tube and canted at 45 degrees as done on many AR-15 set-ups. With this package I believe one would have the benefits of a simple dependable fixed high power scope for medium to long range shooting and a fall back short range red dot for shorter distance shots.
What do you all think?
